The Trump administration announced a landmark agreement Thursday with pharmaceutical companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly to lower prices on their blockbuster GLP-1 medications—treatments widely used for diabetes and obesity—under President Trump’s “Most Favored Nation” policy aimed at putting American patients first.
Under the new deal, both companies have agreed to sell their injectable GLP-1 products for a starting price of $245 per month to Medicare and Medicaid patients, as well as to users of the new TrumpRX discount platform, expected to launch early next year. For oral GLP-1 treatments, the starting price will be $149 per month, applying to newer tablets that are expected to gain FDA approval for obesity treatment in the coming months. That discount will not apply to Rybelsus, the currently approved oral GLP-1 for diabetes.
“The savings generated by these price reductions will be reinvested to expand access for patients with obesity or metabolic or cardiovascular risk—all at the same $245 monthly rate,” a senior administration official said.
According to administration estimates, roughly 10 percent of Medicare beneficiaries could qualify for expanded access to these GLP-1 medications, potentially marking a major shift in how seniors can access modern weight-loss and diabetes drugs.
While federal law currently bars Medicare from covering drugs prescribed solely for obesity, the administration says it is pursuing ways to legally extend coverage for GLP-1s when they’re used for broader health benefits such as cardiovascular protection and metabolic support.
