The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the arrest of a Moldovan illegal immigrant and convicted killer who tortured and threw a victim out of a ninth-floor window.
On Nov. 4 in Los Angeles, Victoria Sorocean was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after it was discovered that she had been convicted in 2013 of premeditated murder with exceptional cruelty in her native Moldova. The victim was tortured inside an apartment in Chişinău — beaten with a stick and an electrical cable — then thrown out of a ninth-floor window. Sorocean received a 17-year prison sentence but fled the country before beginning to serve it.
Sorocean was first arrested by ICE on Jan. 10, 2020, during the first Trump administration. However, she filed multiple legal appeals and asylum claims to delay removal. DHS reports that she was ultimately released back into the United States in 2022, under the Biden administration’s watch.
According to DHS, her case exemplifies broader systemic weaknesses that have allowed “millions of illegal aliens, including violent criminals and murderers,” to live freely in American communities. “It shocks the conscience that the Biden administration released into America a cruel, violent illegal alien who tortured a human being … and then threw her victim from a ninth‐floor window,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. She added that “these are the types of barbaric criminal illegal aliens ICE is targeting every single day.”
McLaughlin also noted that “seventy percent of all ICE arrests are of illegal aliens charged or convicted of a crime in the U.S.,” a figure that — she argues — does not even include foreign fugitives like Sorocean. She emphasized that under President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, “the world’s criminals are no longer welcome in the U.S.”
Sorocean remains in ICE custody and is awaiting deportation proceedings.
