A corrections officer died after being attacked by an inmate Monday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The attack happened around 7:53 a.m. at the River North Correctional Center in Independence, which is a male inmate facility in southwest Virginia, near the North Carolina border.
The officer, Jeremy Lewis Hall, died at a local hospital, according to a release. He was 40-years-old. Hall had been an employee with the VADOC since April 25, 2024.
Two additional officers were treated at a local hospital for injuries, but have since been released.
River North Correctional Center is secure, according to VDOC.
“Our hearts are with the officer’s family, the other officer who was attacked, and to our public safety heroes at River North. The VADOC will do everything in its power to ensure this vicious attack is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson.
No other information has been released. An investigation is underway.
