Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

PAUL’S DEFENSE BRIEF (PDB) – Some say NO. The U.S. military can’t do everything at once. Even with a nearly $1 trillion budget, we can only do so much. Some Pentagon officials are privately warning that we may not be able to threaten Venezuela’s regime, support protesters seeking to topple Iran’s government, and protect its interests in Indo-Pacific without being overstretched.

Add to that the fact that the U.S. National Defense Strategy (NDS), which helps the Pentagon set its priorities and is based on the recently published National Security Strategy (NSS), was supposed to be published by now but has not been. So, the military has no specific doctrine to follow.

“That’s a lot of theaters at the same time, and we are not built to do that,” a U.S. defense official explained.

Navy’s top admiral is concerned about the strain on the new Ford Carrier Strike Group. Though there are currently no aircraft carriers in the Central Command region, the CNO said he would seek alternatives to extending the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group for a potential operation against Iran.

However, the Navy must take risks, act like the U.S. is at war, says the civilian head of the Navy as he spoke about the need for the service to prioritize speed and risk-taking to remain constantly prepared for an international armed conflict.

Meanwhile, should the U.S. quickly fly planes toward the region, they could be there in as little as 16 hours. Trump wrote on Truth Social on January 2 that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue.”

He added, “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.”

NATIONAL SECURITY

Consequences. Michigan Democrat Sen. Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA intelligence officer/analyst, says she is under federal investigation for posting a video urging members of the military to disobey unspecified “illegal orders,” seen by some as akin to inciting mutiny.

HOMELAND SECURITY

A federal jury in New Mexico has convicted a radicalized ‘Antifa’ leftist former Navy SEAL of attempting to kill law enforcement officers at political demonstrations against President Trump in California.

The Coast Guard’s increased focus on capturing illegal migrants at sea in recent years led to a drop-off in drug seizures and hampered its ability to conduct its other missions, according to a watchdog agency report.

DEFENSE POLITICS

More than half of U.S. adults believe Trump has “gone too far” in using the U.S. military to intervene in other countries. So, almost half think he hasn’t gone far enough or is doing just fine.

Veterans say legal and illegal immigration crackdowns and politics around the shooting of two National Guardsmen in DC in November have led to “wholesale punishment” against Afghan allies still in that country who once aided U.S. forces and now seek refuge from the Taliban in the U.S.

VENEZUELA RAID & AFTERMATH

Senate Republicans voted to dismiss a war powers resolution that would have limited Trump’s ability to conduct further attacks on Venezuela after two GOP senators reversed course on supporting the legislation.

Days before the U.S. military operation that removed Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro from power, Trump administration lawyers blessed the action, saying it would “not rise to the level of a war in the constitutional sense” and would serve “important national interests,” according to a legal opinion that articulates a muscular view of presidential power.

IRAN CRISIS

Some U.S. personnel at a key U.S. military base in Qatar were advised to evacuate, as President Trump warned of possible action after a deadly crackdown on protesters in Iran.

Oops. An Iranian-flagged freighter has gone down in the Caspian Sea.

GREENLAND CRISIS

U.S., Denmark trade barbs over Greenland as NATO boosts Arctic presence following Danish Foreign Minister’s tense closed-door meeting at White House with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Europeans trumpet commitment to strengthening Arctic defenses, with focus on Greenland, in bid to soften U.S. Greenland national security claims.

Germany leads a military mission in Greenland.

The U.S. military has a long history in Greenland, from WWII to the Cold War. Trump’s insistence that the U.S. will acquire Greenland in the Arctic “whether they like it or not” is just the latest chapter in a co-dependent and often complicated relationship between the U.S. and the world’s largest island that stretches back more than a century.

Just one in five Americans support efforts to acquire Greenland: Poll.

White House post about Greenland (X).

CHINA THREAT

Japan and the Philippines signed a defense pact that would allow tax-free provision of ammunition, fuel, food, and other necessities when their forces stage joint training to boost deterrence against China’s growing aggression and to bolster their preparation for natural disasters.

RUSSIA THREAT/UKRAINE WAR

The EU said Ukraine must buy weapons and military platforms from European manufacturers under a new $104.8 billion loan, unless they aren’t able to supply what Kyiv needs.

Aerial video from Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Russian-occupied Ukraine appears to show Russian military trucks parked in the facility, a likely breach of international law.

US MILITARY

Navy’s new Trump-class “Golden Fleet” battleship is expected to be cutting-edge. But according to the service’s top officer, it won’t use nuclear propulsion.

Death from above: New U.S. armor-piercing weapon fast-tracked. A smart anti-tank munition that helps soldiers hold their own against tracked vehicles is being hurried to the force after successful testing in Bavaria, Germany.

Space Force put Guardians on notice to purchase its new physical training uniform by the end of January, but it isn’t ready to set a mandatory wear date for its new service dress uniform.

So I’m supposed to believe that Americans want the biggest chunk of land north of us besides Canada in the hands of Russia and China? I think the poll question needs a bit of rewording.

The military services are concerned with combat readiness, the Coast Guard is concerned with illegal immigration and narcoterrorists, the Space Force is concerned with uniforms.

We have been protecting Greenland since WWII; legally, morally, strategically and tactically, Greenland should be a Protectorate of ours like Guam, for example.
