A person was shot and is in critical condition following an incident involving U.S. Border Patrol agents in Pima County, Arizona, on Tuesday morning, authorities said. The shooting occurred at about 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road.
Fire and medical crews from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response treated the injured person at the scene before the victim was airlifted to a regional trauma center by helicopter.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the shooting involved Border Patrol and said investigators are working with the FBI as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities have released limited details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Local reports from the Santa Rita Fire District confirmed the victim sustained severe injuries but did not release additional information.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said no official updates have been issued as the investigation continues. A nearby resident told local media they saw approximately two dozen Border Patrol vehicles and three unmarked black SUVs rushing to the scene shortly after the incident.
The victim’s identity remains unknown, and officials have not confirmed whether any law enforcement officers were injured. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have not yet issued an official comment.
