Unidentified drones were spotted flying over a U.S. Army base in the Washington area that houses senior Trump administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to multiple reports.
The drones were detected over Fort Lesley J. McNair, a sensitive military installation in Washington, D.C., raising immediate security concerns among defense and intelligence officials.
Officials briefed on the matter said several drones were observed in a single night, though the exact number, origin, and purpose of the aircraft remain unknown. The sightings prompted heightened security measures at the base and triggered an urgent response within the federal government.
Authorities have not publicly identified who was operating the drones, and investigations are ongoing. The Pentagon has declined to comment on specific security procedures, citing operational concerns.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions tied to the ongoing conflict with Iran, fueling concerns that the drone activity could be linked to foreign surveillance or retaliation efforts. While no direct connection has been confirmed, the timing has intensified scrutiny across national security agencies.
In response to the breach, security levels were reportedly raised not only in Washington but also at other key U.S. military installations, including bases in New Jersey and Florida. Officials have also reviewed contingency plans, including the potential relocation of high-profile personnel, though no such moves have been confirmed publicly.
The U.S. Sun reported additional details on the latest developments, which come amid retaliation threats from Iran’s surviving leadership:
The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and MacDill Air Force Base are now at threat level Charlie — the highest level other than when an attack has already taken place or is expected immediately.
MacDill Air Force Base, from where US central command operations are directed, has been locked down twice this week.
And the FBI is looking into a suspicious package that forced the base’s visitor centre to close for several hours on Monday.
Trump had given a global security warning to American overseas outposts like embassies, fearing Iranian retaliation.
The sightings highlight a broader and growing concern within the U.S. military: the vulnerability of domestic bases to drone incursions. In recent years, similar incidents have been reported near sensitive installations, often with unclear attribution and limited ability to track operators.
For now, the drones remain unidentified, and federal authorities continue to investigate what officials describe as a potentially serious security breach at one of the nation’s most sensitive military sites.
