Iran launched ballistic missiles toward a joint U.S.-U.K. military base in the Indian Ocean, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing regional conflict.
The missiles targeted Diego Garcia, a strategically important base operated by the United States and the United Kingdom. Officials said two intermediate-range ballistic missiles were fired, but neither struck the installation.
One missile was intercepted by a U.S. warship, while the other failed mid-flight, preventing any damage or casualties at the base.
The attempted strike marks a notable expansion of the conflict’s geographic scope. Diego Garcia sits roughly 2,500 miles from Iran, raising new concerns about the reach of Tehran’s missile capabilities.
The Khorramshahr-4 is likely the intermediate-range ballistic missile that Iran used in the attempted attack on Diego Garcia, which analysts had previously assessed may have a range of +4,000km, though it had only been proven at between 2,000-3,000km. U.K. officials condemned the attack as “reckless,” warning it threatens regional stability and Western interests. The strike comes after Britain allowed the U.S. to use its bases for limited military operations against Iranian targets, a decision that drew a sharp response from Tehran.
The missile launch is part of a broader pattern of escalation in the region. Iran has already carried out missile and drone strikes against U.S. and allied positions across the Middle East, while U.S. and Israeli forces have intensified attacks on Iranian targets.
Even though the strike failed, it underscored long-range attack capabilities by Tehran that it had previously denied. As NBC News reported, the attempted launch points to missile range capabilities that extend beyond Iran’s stated limits:
In an interview with NBC News’ “Meet the Press” earlier this month, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country had intentionally kept the range of its missiles below 1,250 miles “because we don’t want to be felt as a threat by anybody else in the world.”
Although the base was not hit, analysts say the incident underscores the growing risk of a wider conflict, particularly as Iran demonstrates the ability — or at least the intent — to strike targets far beyond its immediate region.
U.S. and allied forces remain on heightened alert as tensions rise across multiple regions, with growing concerns that some Iranian missiles have the range to reach parts of Central Europe.

Well it is official, the Iranians are just like democrats… you can’t trust a darn thing they tell you! Lying to them is like breathing it comes naturally!
“Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said his country had intentionally kept the range of its missiles below 1,250 miles “because we don’t want to be felt as a threat by anybody else in the world.” THAN WHOM? 2000km threatens many countries, not all “friends” of Iran … It is not hard to limit the actual practical range of any missile, as a deceptive tactic, until the greater range capability is needed.
Was the intercepted missile actually a threat to Diego Garcia (in terminal phase), or was it simply intercepted early because it was headed towards Diego Garcia, the only possible target? The mid-flight failure of the other missile may indicate an attempt to add a booster(s) or other modification(s) to the rocket to extend its range that failed mid-flight. Iran is quite good at mis- and disinformation in its official public statements.
The trajectory of any non-steered moving object can be observed as to where it comes from and where it has been planned to hit.
The arc of it’s motion is a sure sign!
Hence the need to saturate bomb all of their missile, etc., launch facilities! NOW!
