The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has ordered thousands of troops from the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division to deploy to the Middle East, as the United States ramps up its military posture in the conflict with Iran.

U.S. officials said between 2,000 and 3,000 paratroopers have received formal deployment orders, with forces expected to move from the division’s Immediate Response Force, a rapid-reaction unit capable of deploying within hours.

The move adds to an already substantial U.S. presence — about 50,000 troops in the region, with two Marine Expeditionary Units (roughly 5,000 Marines) now heading to the Persian Gulf.

Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAV) attached to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) disembark from the dock landing ship USS Comstock (LSD 45).

Rapid-Response Force Mobilized

The 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is designed for fast global deployment, often used in the early stages of crises to secure key infrastructure, reinforce positions or prepare for larger operations. Officials say many of the troops being deployed are part of the division’s Immediate Response Force, which can mobilize within 18 hours for missions ranging from combat operations to evacuations.

New reporting from Politico’s Paul McLeary adds fresh details to the rapidly developing situation:

No decisions have been made for troops to enter the country, according to two defense officials, who confirmed the planned deployment. But the buildup of troops is a drastic escalation in the U.S.-Israel war against the Iranian regime and heightens the possibility that American servicemembers will go into Iran.

The troop increase comes a month into U.S. military airstrikes against Iranian military forces and infrastructure, and amid spiraling gas prices as Iranian officials block access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.

U.S. Central Command, which oversees the effort, said Tuesday that U.S. aircraft and missile attacks have “destroyed more than 9,000 military targets” inside Iran since the attacks started on Feb. 28. Military officials have said the strikes targeted Iran’s missile launchers, navy and its defense industrial base. Strikes have also killed dozens of the regime’s leadership.

Escalation Amid Iran Conflict

The move comes as the Trump administration pursues a dual-track strategy — continuing military preparations while also exploring a ceasefire proposal with Iran. (RELATED: Trump Says Iran Gave The US ‘A Very Big Present’ Related To Oil And Gas)

At the same time:

  • U.S. and Israeli forces have continued strikes on Iranian targets
  • Iran has launched missile attacks in response
  • Tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route

Unclear Mission Scope

Officials have not publicly confirmed the exact mission of the newly deployed troops or whether they will enter Iran itself. However, the deployment is widely seen as:

  • A deterrence signal to Iran
  • A way to protect U.S. assets and personnel
  • A move to give the administration flexibility for potential escalation

Bottom Line

The deployment of thousands of 82nd Airborne troops marks a significant step in the U.S. military buildup in the Middle East — positioning forces for rapid action while diplomacy continues, and underscoring the growing risk of a broader conflict.
