The Holy See Press Office has rejected reports describing a contentious meeting between Vatican officials and representatives of Donald Trump’s Pentagon, calling the claims “completely untrue.”
Vatican rejects claims of confrontation
In a statement released Friday, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni acknowledged that a January meeting did take place between Elbridge Colby and Christophe Pierre. However, he described it as a routine diplomatic exchange.
According to the Vatican, the meeting was part of the normal duties of a papal representative and involved discussion of issues of mutual interest. The statement explicitly rejected media portrayals suggesting the encounter was hostile or coercive.
Disputed reporting about pressure campaign
The response followed a report claiming American officials had attempted to pressure the Vatican into aligning with American policy on Iran. That account alleged that Colby responded forcefully to comments from Pope Leo XIV regarding respect for national borders, and suggested that U.S. military power gave it broad freedom of action.
The report also claimed that historical references—such as the Avignon Papacy—were invoked in a way that some interpreted as a threat to the Vatican’s independence.
The Vatican’s statement directly contradicted those characterizations, calling them fabricated.
Mixed responses from U.S. officials and commentators
American officials also rejected the reporting. A Defense Department rapid response team described the meeting as “substantive, respectful, and professional,” while emphasizing that accounts suggesting otherwise were exaggerated.
JD Vance said he had not reviewed the report and declined to comment on what he described as unverified claims. Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch said he spoke directly with Cardinal Pierre, who reportedly characterized the allegations as “fabrications.”
Controversial writer Christopher Hale circulated the story and claimed that concerns about the meeting had been significant enough to affect internal Vatican discussions, including possible changes to future plans involving the pope. Those claims have not been independently confirmed.
Dubious origins
The broader dispute over what actually happened remains somewhat muddled, but not evenly split. Officials on both sides of the meeting — including representatives from the American government and the Vatican — have publicly rejected the more dramatic claims as fabricated or exaggerated. By contrast, the more alarming interpretation has largely been driven by a smaller number of commentators and secondhand accounts that have not been independently verified.
