The United States is planning to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany, marking a significant shift in U.S. military posture in Europe.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the move following a broader Pentagon review, with the withdrawal expected to take place over the next six to 12 months.

Tensions With Allies Drive Decision

The move comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and European allies, particularly over support for the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

  • President Donald Trump has criticized NATO allies for not doing enough to support U.S. operations
  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently warned the U.S. was being “humiliated” by Iran
  • U.S. officials reportedly viewed such remarks as “unhelpful” and counterproductive

The decision is being interpreted as both a strategic shift and a political signal to allies.

Officials say the withdrawal could include a brigade combat team currently stationed in Germany or the cancellation of a planned long-range missile battalion deployment.

According to Stars and Stripes, about 34,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany:

If the U.S. aims to reduce the force presence in quickly, rotational forces that move in and out of Germany could be the first to go. If the plan involves moving permanently based units, such as the Vilseck, Germany-based 2nd Cavalry Regiment, the Pentagon will need to uproot troops and families and find a new base of operations for those forces.

Officials have also indicated that forces could be repositioned to other regions, including the Indo-Pacific, as part of a wider strategic recalibration.

However, the announcement has raised concerns among lawmakers and defense analysts, who warn it could weaken NATO unity and limit U.S. operational flexibility.

There are also questions about the cost and logistical challenges of relocating troops, as well as the potential impact on readiness.

Congress is already watching closely, with limits in place on how far troop levels can be reduced without oversight.
