President Donald Trump was evaluated by 22 medical specialists during his latest physical examination, an unusually large number that appears to exceed the number of physicians involved in the medical assessments of recent presidents and is raising new questions about the White House’s handling of presidential health disclosures.
The revelation came in a medical report released by White House physician Dr. Sean Barbabella following Trump’s May 26 visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The report concluded that the 79-year-old president remains in “excellent health.” Still, it also disclosed that specialists conducted a broad range of evaluations, including cardiac imaging, cancer screenings, and other preventive assessments.
What the White House has not disclosed is why so many specialists were involved.
According to reporting by The Washington Post, Trump typically saw roughly a dozen specialists during previous examinations. The White House has declined to identify the specialties represented among the 22 physicians or explain what prompted such an expansive review.
Doctors Question Unusual Scope of Exam
Several physicians interviewed by the Post described the number as highly unusual.
“It is an extraordinary number,” said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a longtime cardiologist who treated former Vice President Dick Cheney. “What specialties do they represent? Why so many?”
Media reviews of presidential medical records show that President George H.W. Bush consulted five specialists during his first White House physical, while President George W. Bush saw 12 specialists during one of his executive examinations. Trump himself typically saw between 11 and 14 specialists during previous annual checkups.
White House officials defended the examination, saying the number of specialists reflected an effort to provide a comprehensive and preventive evaluation of an aging president rather than evidence of a specific medical concern.
Still, outside medical experts noted that presidential physicals traditionally involve far fewer specialists unless doctors are monitoring known health conditions.
Questions Persist About Transparency
The latest disclosure comes amid growing scrutiny of Trump’s health as he approaches his 80th birthday.
The White House has repeatedly maintained that Trump remains physically and mentally fit for office. Nevertheless, questions persisted for months after reports revealed the president underwent a CT scan during an earlier examination and received multiple imaging studies during recent visits to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Administration officials initially declined to specify what parts of the body were being examined, fueling speculation about the purpose of the testing. The White House later sought to address those concerns when Barbabella clarified that the scans were conducted as part of preventative cardiovascular and abdominal health screenings and that all results were normal.
The administration has also pushed back aggressively against speculation about the president’s health, dismissing rumors and pointing to physician reports that describe Trump as being in exceptional condition.
Yet many details about the testing remain undisclosed.
Presidential Health Under Renewed Spotlight
The issue has taken on greater significance as both political parties grapple with questions surrounding the age and fitness of national leaders.
Trump, who turns 80 this week, has frequently touted his health and has publicly claimed that his latest examination came back “perfect.” After the May visit, he posted on social media that “everything checked out PERFECTLY.”
But the involvement of 22 specialists has sparked a new round of scrutiny because it represents a significant increase over prior presidential examinations, and the White House has offered few specifics about what prompted such a large medical team.
For now, the administration insists the explanation is simple: a thorough checkup for a president approaching 80. Critics and some medical experts say the lack of detail leaves unanswered questions about whether the extensive examination was purely precautionary or driven by concerns the public has yet to learn about.
