Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to a Washington-area hospital Sunday morning, according to his office, which said the longtime Kentucky Republican is “receiving excellent care.” Officials have not disclosed the reason for the hospitalization or provided details about his condition.
“Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care,” spokesman David Popp said in a brief statement. No additional information was released.
Few Details Released
The hospitalization comes just months after McConnell spent more than a week in the hospital in February following what his office described at the time as “flu-like symptoms.” He was later discharged and returned to Senate duties.
Reuters reported that neighbors saw the 84-year-old senator being transported by stretcher into an ambulance outside his Washington residence Sunday morning. Neither McConnell’s office nor hospital officials have commented further.
Longtime Republican Leader Has Faced Health Challenges
McConnell has experienced several public health incidents in recent years, including multiple falls and widely publicized episodes in 2023 in which he briefly froze during press appearances. He also suffered a concussion and broken ribs following a fall in Washington in 2023.
A childhood polio survivor, McConnell has acknowledged mobility challenges and has occasionally used a wheelchair as a precaution after falls.
Retirement Approaching
McConnell, who first entered the Senate in 1985 and served as Republican leader for nearly two decades, announced he will retire when his current term ends in January 2027. He stepped down from Senate Republican leadership in 2025 but remains an influential voice on defense and foreign policy issues.
As of Sunday evening, no timetable had been provided for his release, and Senate leaders had not announced whether his hospitalization would affect the chamber’s schedule this week.
