An alleged plot involving explosive-laden drones and a secondary sniper team targeting Sunday’s UFC fight at the White House was disrupted before it could be carried out, according to FBI Director Kash Patel. Patel described the case as one of the most serious domestic security threats investigators have confronted this year.
Patel revealed details of the operation Tuesday, saying federal authorities intercepted a multi-phase scheme involving individuals who allegedly intended to use drones carrying explosive devices against the high-profile event. The UFC card, championed by President Donald Trump as part of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations, drew thousands of spectators and some of the biggest names in combat sports, politics, and entertainment.
Patel Describes Serious Threat
According to Patel, investigators uncovered the plot during an ongoing counterterrorism investigation and moved quickly to prevent the suspects from advancing their plans. The FBI first learned of the threat on June 10, launching a swift multi-state operation. Intelligence officers intercepted encrypted chat communications on the Signal app involving at least 23 individuals.
While officials have not publicly released extensive operational details, Patel indicated the alleged threat involved unmanned aerial systems capable of carrying explosive payloads. Investigators revealed the suspects intended to use these devices to cause mass casualties and panic in the vicinity of the White House.
Patel described the disruption as a major success for federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Federal authorities have since executed search warrants and taken suspects into custody across multiple states, including a confirmed arrest in Cincinnati, Ohio.

White House UFC Event Seen as High-Profile Target
The UFC event attracted significant attention since Trump first floated the idea as part of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration. Hosted on the White House South Lawn, the “UFC Freedom 250” card drew over 4,000 attendees — including active-duty service members — and coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday. Trump argued that the event would showcase American culture and athletic competition while drawing worldwide attention to the anniversary festivities.
The unusual venue made the event one of the highest-profile sporting spectacles ever held at the White House. Security experts noted that such visibility could also make the gathering an attractive target for those seeking to cause large-scale disruption or harm.

Growing Concern Over Drone Threats
The alleged plot comes amid increasing concern within national security circles about the proliferation of inexpensive commercial drones and the risks associated with their unauthorized modification. Global conflicts have demonstrated how relatively low-cost drones can be adapted for dangerous purposes, presenting a significant challenge for domestic security planners.
Federal agencies have repeatedly warned that drone technology presents one of the fastest-growing challenges for protecting large public gatherings. Congress has considered several proposals aimed at expanding counter-drone authorities for federal, state, and local agencies to better secure major national events.
Security Preparations Intensifying
While the White House did not release specific details regarding security measures ahead of time, extensive preparations ultimately kept the event secure. Major events involving the president already receive layered protection from the Secret Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, military support units, and local law enforcement partners.
Following the multi-state crackdown, federal officials say they remain focused on identifying and neutralizing emerging threats before they can be carried out.
