Friday campaign appears to mark the heaviest day of renewed U.S. operations

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth released a dramatic image Friday showing Iran’s maritime traffic control tower at the Port of Chabahar collapsing during the latest wave of U.S. airstrikes, highlighting what appears to be the most extensive day yet of the renewed American air campaign against the Islamic Republic.

Based on the duration, geographic scope and number of reported targets, Friday’s operations represent the most sustained round of strikes since the campaign resumed, with attacks stretching across multiple strategic sites along Iran’s southern coastline.

The newly released image highlighted one of the operation’s most significant targets: Chabahar, Iran’s only deep-water port on the Gulf of Oman.

Critical maritime hub targeted

According to available information, U.S. forces struck the port’s maritime traffic control tower along with nearby piers, docks, and military infrastructure.

The control tower serves as the command center for vessel movements into and out of Chabahar, coordinating maritime traffic, navigation safety, and daily port operations. Its destruction is expected to significantly reduce Iran’s ability to monitor commercial and military shipping while disrupting logistics at one of the country’s most strategically important ports.

Unlike many Iranian ports that depend on the Strait of Hormuz, Chabahar provides direct access to the Indian Ocean, allowing cargo to bypass one of the world’s most vulnerable maritime chokepoints.

The port has also played a central role in trade routes connecting Iran with Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Europe, including projects supported by India through the International North-South Transport Corridor.

Military analysts say degrading the facility could complicate both civilian commerce and naval logistics while limiting Tehran’s ability to coordinate activity along the Gulf of Oman.

Strikes expanded across southern Iran

Friday’s campaign extended well beyond Chabahar.

Additional strikes reportedly targeted coastal surveillance systems, air defense batteries, missile and drone storage facilities, naval installations, and logistics infrastructure across southern Iran, including sites near Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Bushehr.

The broader operation appeared aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to monitor and threaten commercial shipping while expanding U.S. pressure beyond the Strait of Hormuz and farther along the Gulf of Oman coastline.

The strikes followed weeks of heightened tensions in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors, where commercial vessels have faced growing risks from military activity and threats against international shipping.

Shipping incident underscores regional risks

Later Friday morning Eastern Daylight Time, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported that a commercial tanker had been struck by an unidentified projectile approximately 19 nautical miles east of Khasab, Oman, near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the advisory, the vessel sustained minor structural damage to its port side. No injuries were reported, and there was no environmental impact.

The incident occurred on July 16 and adds to growing concerns over maritime security as military operations continue throughout the region.

Commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has already declined amid ongoing threats, while warnings attributed to Iran and its regional partners have increased pressure on shipping companies operating in Gulf waters.

With U.S. strikes expanding across Iran’s southern coastline and new incidents affecting commercial vessels, the security outlook for one of the world’s most critical energy and shipping corridors remains highly volatile.
