After much speculation, the first Democrat lawmaker to publicly announce he will not support President Biden’s re-election campaign has come forward. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) says that the Party needs to head in a different direction if it stands any chance of maintaining its grip on the White House in 2024.
“I have respect for Joe Biden. I think he has, despite some mistakes and missteps, despite his age, I think he’s a man of decency, of good principle, of compassion, of empathy, and of strength. But to answer your question directly, which I know is quite rare, no, I don’t,” Phillips told WCCO on Thursday.
Rep. Phillips is hardly the first Democrat to say the Party should be focused on the next generation and cast a shadow of doubt over Biden, however, he marks the first lawmaker to publicly say he will not support Biden’s second term.
“Joe Biden has served our country admirably, with principle and with decency at a time when we surely needed it,” he said. “But I’m part of a caucus here in Congress where our three top leaders are over 80 years old, where the president will be over 80 at the next election. And I think it’s time for a generational change. I’m not shy to say that. I do believe most of my colleagues feel the same way.”
Biden is the oldest president in American history and would be 81 during the next presidential election. While he’s yet to formally announce his campaign Biden has repeatedly told reporters he plans to run as long as he remains in good health.
Will Rep. Phillips’s break with Biden cause a domino effect amongst other Democrat lawmakers or will they remain loyal to Biden? So far top Congressional Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Bernie Sander (I-VT) have thrown their support behind Biden.
However, other high-profile Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have remained tight-lipped regarding their plans to support Biden in the next election. Last month the New York Congresswoman was asked during an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” if she would endorse Biden’s re-election plan and she delivered an eyebrow-raising response.
“I mean first of all, I’m focused on winning the majority right now and preserving a majority this year in 2022, so we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But I think if the President has a vision, then that’s something certainly, we’re all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes.”
“Yeah, you know, I think uh, we should endorse when we get to it. I believe that the President has been doing a very good job so far, and should he run again, I think that we’ll take a look at it,” Ocasio-Cortez responded, “but right now we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a presidential election.”
Bottomline, Joe Biden should have never been placed in office at all!
