My grandmother married a World War II veteran and had 12 children. Following his death, she became a Carmelite nun and was cloistered almost until her own passing back in December. I remember the most important thing she ever told me: It will seem as if the faithful in the United States — and those who value tradition and foundation — have fled and gone into hiding. The comeback, however, will be tenfold and represent a rally of belief in the U.S. The trick would be finding ways to cope with the collapse before the rebound occurred. And that is what we are seeing play out today.
From national politics and the upcoming midterms to social media vitriol, and every distraction found in between, the toxicity level is rising. Social media seen through phones and tablets represent the real world with each passing day. It’s undeniable. Unity has become a foreign word and identity is no longer found in God alone, or by looking within.
Left, Right and Center all feel the same way it seems, but for different reasons. So how do we help fix it? Faith. By holding tight to what we believe in and reminding ourselves why we bother to believe it in the first place.
Love of family, for life, a special career of service and a loving partner are all valid, virtuous things to desire. The love of money, power and other nefarious wants, however, has seemingly replaced what was once held sacred in America.
Greed, avarice, envy and evil are rising in unison to replace God and country. In addition, it comes at a time when America couldn’t be in a more vulnerable position.
The way we make it through this is to believe that each one of us can be better human beings and start with ourselves, by becoming north stars for others — a compass — a worthy example to follow.
America is the envy of the world for its peaceful streets, endless food supply, opportunity, freedom of self and belief and because we value human life through charity and religion. These are all under attack and are beginning to collapse. It is up to the few who see this trend to step up, offer as much wisdom as possible to the next generation and live a life worth emulating.
We suffer today from a lack of mentors. They’re still out there. But nowhere near the same numbers as they were 10-20 years ago. There are many reasons for this, but the world is scary enough without a roadmap. Arrogance is to be expected in the young. Immaturity is not expected in adults. Yet today, those who should be responsible are more likely to be caught shirking their duties or focusing solely on their own lives.
This must end. For those who feel they can’t dispense wisdom, volunteer your time in other ways. Teach a class on something specific and valuable, find a protégé, learn more about your religion, visit the sick in the various hospitals near you and feed someone without a home. We can no longer rely on the government and a small portion of the wealthy to lead the way in this arena.
We all must find a piece of the country currently broken and make it our resolve to repair some of the damage.
In the words of famed Christian medic Desmond Doss, as depicted in the film “Hacksaw Ridge,” — “With the world so set on tearing itself apart it don’t seem like such a bad thing to me, to want to put a little bit of it back together.”
We fight to find that better part of ourselves deep within because this is what we are called to do. To be a light against the darkness. Standing up and making part of your life public can be uncomfortable, or unfamiliar at first, but almost everyone has at least one thing to offer their fellow human beings.
Find something you hold dear which makes you unique, or that brings you joy, and then discover a means to spread it far and wide.
If we instead, choose to continue on this apathetic path we’re currently on, not only will our future deteriorate, but the sons will suffer for the sins of the father as a world, without a strong America, limps forward into the future down a dark, cold, uncertain road.
Shine your light to remember why we fight and make your voices heard before it’s too late.

How true that we find so few mentors to look up to during a time when many are in need of one. Many of our public officials are lacking in honesty, charity and decency. Even more so in service to others, the very basis of being a public official/servant.
There are many good people in this country who remain silent and out of view lest they be condemned for their actions and beliefs or become victims of cancel culture.
However, the virtuous actions and beliefs of these good people are exactly what our young people need to inspire them and show them the direction to go. Even at great cost it is vital to our future generations that we stand up for good and right no matter the personal attacks. And it’s equally important that we continue to stand and act through any attacks against us. Young people need to see that we can withstand much if we follow our beliefs and are righteous.
