ANALYSIS – Double standards galore. Even as the White House bashed House GOP plans to investigate the Biden family’s shady foreign business dealings, Joe Biden’s weaponized attorney general, Merrick Garland, announced he is appointing a special prosecutor to investigate former President Trump and his allies.
This special counsel, Jack Smith, will oversee the alleged national security documents retained at Mar-a-Lago by former President Trump as well as some aspects of the criminal investigation into Jan. 6, also involving Trump. (RELATED: Garland to Name Special Counsel to Investigate Trump)
Garland said that he made the decision partly due to Trump’s 2024 announcement on Wednesday and the fact that Joe Biden has said he will likely also run.
In his announcement, Garland said:
The Department of Justice has long recognized that in certain, extraordinary cases, it is in the public interest to appoint a special prosecutor to independently manage an investigation and prosecution.
This of course adds potential additional legal troubles for the former president just as he begins his next campaign.
According to the Daily Caller, a Trump spokesperson told the outlet: “This is a totally expected political stunt by a feckless, politicized, weaponized Biden Department of Justice.”
This also follows four years of the Democrats’ ‘big lie’ that Team Trump colluded with Russia to undermine the 2016 election. (RELATED: New Docs May Reveal How Chinese Communist Agent Spurred and Influenced Biden Presidential Bid)
This lie effectively made them the first ‘election deniers’ since they claimed Trump’s alleged collusion made his election illegitimate.
Garland noted that Smith will be looking into Trump’s holding of allegedly classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and whether he or his team obstructed the subsequent investigation.
According to Garland, Smith will also investigate whether “any person or entity unlawfully interfered in the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election” or with the certification of the electoral vote tabulation around Jan. 6.
Meanwhile, the White House is vigorously attacking the newly-announced House Republican probe into Joe Biden’s apparent involvement in his son Hunter’s foreign business dealings.
Team Biden claims that the GOP investigation is a politically-motivated rehashing of “long-debunked conspiracy theories.”
This, despite the fact that the Hunter Biden laptop and ensuing evidence has been proven valid, and increasingly points to ‘Biden collusion’ with Hunter’s businesses and authoritarian enemy foreign governments such as Russia and China.
The Epoch Times (ET) reports:
…Reps. James Comer (R-Ky.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) announced on Nov. 17 that the House Oversight Committee will investigate whether the president was involved in his son’s business dealings, claims that the elder Biden has denied.
Comer, who is the incoming chairman of the Oversight Committee, said at a press conference that, contrary to the president’s claims, whistleblower evidence shows that he was directly involved in his son Hunter’s international business dealings.
“This is an investigation of Joe Biden, the president of the United States, and why he lied to the American people about his knowledge and participation in his family’s international business schemes,” Comer said.
ET added:
Republicans released a report (pdf) on Nov. 17 outlining allegations of federal crimes committed by or to the benefit of the Biden family.
“The Biden family’s business dealings implicate a wide range of criminality from human trafficking, to potential violations of the Constitution,” Comer said.
Comer said that the alleged crimes include conspiracy to defraud the United States, wire fraud, violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Action, tax evasion, money laundering, and violations of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.
Ironically, the White House spin on this could be just as easily said by Team Trump over the latest DOJ special prosecutor investigating Trump.

Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House Counsel’s office, reacted to the GOP’s announcement of the probe by issuing a critical statement and announcing that he would begin sharing on his official work account on Twitter “the facts” and responding to the Republicans’ “incessant politically-motivated ‘investigation’ threats against President Biden.”
