FRIDAY PDB – No surprises. The White House releases after-action reviews on Afghanistan withdrawal. The documented lessons learned from the Afghanistan withdrawal became publicly available for the first time on Thursday with the White House’s release of its after-action reviews.
AND, OF COURSE, TEAM BIDEN BLAMES TRUMP FOR BIDEN’S DISASTER.
McCaul calls Kirby’s comments on Afghanistan withdrawal ‘disgraceful and insulting.’ The GOP chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday blasted the White House for dismissing the idea that the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan was chaotic and shifting blame to Trump for creating unfavorable conditions for the pullout.
Biden literally reversed Trump on every major policy within days of being inaugurated, except Trump’s admittedly imperfect plan to withdraw from Afghanistan.
As I have previously written, Biden followed that Trump policy without pause and made it infinitely worse. Ignoring all the conditions set by Trump and recklessly retreating even when it was obvious the withdrawal was a complete catastrophe.

Ukraine war plans leak prompts Pentagon investigation. Classified documents detailing secret U.S. and NATO plans have appeared on Twitter and Telegram.
HOMELAND DEFENSE
Canada ups Arctic surveillance capabilities to protect North America. It is searching for sites along its border with the U.S. for new long-range radars designed to protect U.S. and Canadian cities.
CHINA THREAT
China vows ‘forceful’ measures after US-Taiwan meeting. It promised reprisals against Taiwan after a meeting between the U.S. House speaker and the island’s president, saying that the U.S. was on a “wrong and dangerous road.”
China imposes sanctions on Taiwan’s US envoy, US institutions. It has targeted Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the U.S., prohibiting her and family members from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau.
AS I REPORTED YESTERDAY – China deploys aircraft carrier strike group off Taiwan’s east coast. According to military officials in Taipei and Tokyo.
Pentagon to use new Taiwan arms transfer authority, similar to Ukraine. It wants to take full advantage of the authorities Congress recently granted, but first it needs the lawmakers who control the purse strings to follow through with hard cash.
RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR
FOOLS ERRAND – Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 408. The French president, who is in Beijing, said he is counting on his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to “bring Russia to its senses” and end its war in Ukraine.
Blasts hit Russia-controlled city in Ukraine on supply route to Crimea. The strikes on Melitopol make strategic sense because they could help to break through Russia’s land bridge and restore Ukraine’s access to the Azov Sea.
Greece pledges military assistance to Ukraine for ‘as long as it takes.’ But officials cautioned that it needs to keep much of its Russian-made weapons for its own defense.
IRAN THREAT
Drone strike on US troops may indicate expanded campaign by pro-Iran militants. The deadly Iranian drone strike on a U.S. base in Syria last month may signal more Iranian-backed attacks on U.S. troops.
SPACE THREAT
China’s military aims to launch 13,000 satellites to rival Elon Musk’s Starlink. In the race for low-earth orbit dominance, Beijing is years behind SpaceX and worried about the national security threat.
Space Force’s responsive space strategy taking shape. Officials said they are refining their understanding of what it means to quickly react to threats as the service prepares for its second Tactically Responsive Space mission this summer, dubbed Victus Nox.
SPACECOM ops head ‘tired of the excuses’ about satellite tracking gaps. Not happy with America’s ability to precisely track adversarial satellites, Maj. Gen. David Miller fumed, “Somebody’s got to figure this out. The American people have paid for this. Somebody’s got to deliver.”
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
Largest air exercise in NATO history to include hundreds of Guardsmen. NATO countries this summer will launch the largest military air exercise in the transatlantic alliance’s 74-year history, with more than 220 aircraft and 10,000 participants from 24 nations.
Deadly attack exposes growing threat in Mexico: The military. Uniformed soldiers shot unarmed civilians then blocked medics from providing care, a top government official said. To many Mexicans, such abuse is all too familiar.
Israel strikes Lebanon and Gaza after major rocket attack. Its military launched air strikes on targets belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Iranian navy surface action group docked in South Africa, satellite photos reveal. Its two-ship surface action group was spotted this week in port in Cape Town, South Africa, after failing to transit the Panama Canal.
US MILITARY
Air Force plans to request 72 fighters every year. Top leaders have said for years that it needs to buy at least that number each year to both modernize its fighter fleet and lower its overall age.
America’s only heavy icebreaker scheduled to return to Seattle this weekend. The Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star, the country’s only heavy icebreaker, is set to return to its Seattle homeport this Saturday.
TRAGIC AND UNBELIEVABLE – Elite troops died being sucked out of planes. Critics blame their parachutes. A Navy SEAL and an Air Force commando died, while a Green Beret may lose an arm, after their parachutes prematurely opened and violently ripped them from planes.
