Good morning.

Congress is mounting its strongest challenge yet to President Trump’s Iran War, federal prosecutors have unveiled a sanctions-evasion case tied to Iran’s nuclear program, and investigators in Washington, D.C., are digging deeper into allegations that police officials manipulated crime statistics.

The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to approve a war powers resolution to limit unauthorized American military involvement in Iran.

Sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, the measure would require the White House.

WEDNESDAY PDB – ‘QAnon-embraced’ film pulled from screening on-base at SOUTHCOM. SOUTHCOM planned and then canceled free screenings of Christian-faith-based thriller “Sound of Freedom.” The movie’s been a runaway hit, grossing more than $200 million.

Unfortunately, its lead actor Jim Caviezel (who played Jesus in the Mel Gibson movie ‘Passion of Christ’) has publicly linked the film’s anti-sex-trafficking plot to some QAnon conspiracy theories. But the movie itself does no such thing.

THE EXCELLENT FILM IS FACT-BASED AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH QANON.

The U.S. Army Garrison-Miami initially invited all locally based personnel to attend “In support of SOUTHCOM’s mission to promote respect for human rights and combating trafficking in persons in Central and South America and the Caribbean.”

And they were right to do so. The command did later add: “the film is currently available to view at local theaters, and personnel and their families who would like to see the film are encouraged to do so.”

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories from conservative national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

PENTAGON WOKE WATCH

RATHER THAN RECRUITING ‘CLEAN’ AIRMEN – Air Force eases restrictions on airmen taking HIV-prevention pills. The changes aim to keep more service members in the air and in uniform.

IF BIDEN REVERSES HIS DECISION FORCING DOD TO PROVIDE ABORTION TRAVEL AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE – THE HOLD GOES AWAY – Tuberville’s hold on promotions ‘corroding’ US forces, burdening military families, Biden’s secretaries of Army, Navy, Air Force say. They claim that Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama block is putting American service members at risk across the globe.

NATIONAL SECURITY

US Admiral sounds alarm amid rising Russian, Chinese movement in high north. Adm. Daryl Caudle says he is concerned what Russia “may or may not be doing” as it continues to militarize its northern coast.

US military to launch ICBM in display of nuclear forces’ readiness. It plans to launch an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile from California overnight.

3 ways DARPA aims to tame ‘strategic chaos’ with AI. Combat is too complicated and chaotic for existing AI to analyze, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is trying to figure out the best way to combine algorithms with human expertise.

CHINA THREAT

BRING ON THE DRONES! – Pentagon plans vast AI fleet to counter China threat. It seeks an array of air, land, and sea-based autonomous systems to keep pace with adversaries.

Kendall pledges ‘major’ review of DAF’s readiness to meet China challenge. After saying the Department of the Air Force was not as prepared as it could be for war against China, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall pledged a sweeping review of Air Force and Space Force capabilities.

US, Philippine warships practice ‘division tactics’ near flashpoint in South China Sea. Guided-missile destroyers from the U.S. and Philippine navies recently carried out “close proximity” maneuvering drills near a contested island chain in the South China Sea.

China is honing runway-repair teams. In a Pacific conflict, sustained air operations will turn on the ability to keep airfields open.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Russia says southeast Ukraine is now the focus of fighting in war. Russia’s defense minister says this area has become the most recent hot spot in the 18-month war.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 560. Russia stepped up claims that Ukraine’s months-long counteroffensive had failed with Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu both claiming the effort had not worked. Shoigu claimed that Ukraine had lost more than 66,000 soldiers and 7,600 weapons since the start of the counteroffensive. He didn’t mention Russian losses.

Ukraine says it has manufactured and fired a long-range missile. A domestically produced missile would give Ukraine the ability to strike targets in Russia without using weapons donated by the West.

Cyber-teams fight a high-tech war on front lines. Ukraine cyber-operators are being deployed on the front lines of the war, dueling close-up with their Russian counterparts in a new kind of high-tech battle.

Ukraine’s secret boat raids are exposing cracks in Russia’s southern front. Small, clandestine boat raids along the Dnipro River are playing an outsize role in Ukraine’s counteroffensive strategy—creating tough choices for Russian commanders.

IRAN THREAT

DESPERATE FOR ANOTHER NUKE DEAL WITH BIDEN – UN nuclear watchdog report says Iran slows its enrichment of near-weapons-grade uranium. That could be a sign Tehran is trying to ease tensions after years of strain with the U.S.

SPACE THREAT

It’s not about where US Space Command goes but whether it should exist at all. The federal government should not be concerned with the Colorado versus Alabama brawl over the potential future HQ of the new Space Command. Instead, it should rethink whether the command should even exist.

HMMM – IT WILL INCREASINGLY DO ‘ORGANIZED VIOLENCE’ – OR AT LEAST KINETIC WARFARE – The Space Force needs a brand-new culture of its own. It doesn’t do organized violence—and shouldn’t pretend that it does.

HOMELAND SECURITY

HE WASN’T EVEN IN DC ON JAN. 6! – Ex-Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio gets 22 years in prison for Jan. 6. Former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio’s sentence is the longest so far among more than 1,100 Capitol riot cases.

Hurricane Idalia prompts first deployment of New Florida State Guard. Among those helping are the newly re-established Florida State Guard. This is the civilian volunteer force’s first deployment since being disbanded at the end of World War II. It was re-established by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

AUKUS standoff: Australia, UK wait on Congress to approve pact. The agreement is intended to draw the three countries’ defense industries closer together by helping Australia develop its own nuclear-powered submarine fleet while sharing top secret technology among the allies.

AS TRUMP DID – Station US troops in Poland, not Germany. Warsaw and other allies on NATO’s eastern flank are vital to deterrence and are pulling their weight. Germany is not.

COOL! – Poland unveils HAASTA prototype for drone-on-drone warfare. It is designed to hunt low velocity flying Shahed-type drones and destroying the enemy target with an underbelly mounted 5.45mm machine gun.

Fighting between rival US-backed groups in Syria could undermine war against the Islamic State (ISIS). The weeklong clashes, where hundreds of American troops are deployed, point to dangerous cracks in the coalition that has kept a lid on the defeated Islamic State group for years.

Armenia says it will stage joint military exercise with US next week. This will likely irritate Russia.

France reportedly in talks with Niger for possible withdrawal of its troops. This could end in the ‘partial withdrawal’ of troops amid frayed ties following the July 26 coup.

US MILITARY

How the ionosphere can help NORAD detect cruise missiles faster. The Air Force is bringing back an old radar technology to detect cruise missiles, but experts warn it must be deployed sooner alongside a comprehensive network of missile detecting and defeating systems to be effective.
