Pentagon Imagining Cybernetic Robocop ‘Super Soldiers’

MONDAY PDB – Worrisome future? – Pentagon scientists discuss cybernetic ‘super soldiers’ that feel nothing while killing in dystopian presentation. Imagine a future where the U.S. deploys “super soldiers” directly inspired by Captain America and Iron Man.

In Orlando, Florida, where five illustrious members of the military-industrial complex gathered to discuss super soldiers at the “Black Swan—Dawn of the Super Soldier” panel.

The soldier of the future will be “flooded with pain-numbing stimulants,” cybernetically enhanced, with the “ability to regrow limbs & quickly heal wounds like a lizard.” And one official, sort-of joked, must be eventually “terminated.”

“Enhanced soldiers would be reduced to bionic men, who run fast, do not need to sleep, eat and drink very little, and can fight all the time. A new species is born: Homo robocopus.”

Israel orders mass evacuations as it widens offensive; Palestinians are running out of places to go. The Israeli military on Monday renewed its calls for mass evacuations from the southern town of Khan Younis, where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge in recent weeks.

POLITICS

BAD PRECEDENT – NO TRIAL – House expels New York Rep. George Santos. The vote to expel was 311-114. Expulsion requires support from two-thirds of the House, a purposefully high bar.

Senator calls Austin ‘naive’ on Hamas: ‘I have lost all confidence in this guy.’ Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday labeled Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin “naive” for saying Israel risks a “strategic defeat” if it doesn’t take steps to protect civilians.

Pentagon extremism training faced criticism from all sides. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered domestic extremism training in February 2021. Reporter spoke to troops who participated.

NATIONAL SECURITY

HE IS RIGHT ON THIS – Defense Secretary calls out those who advocate isolationism. Lloyd Austin said the U.S. must reject calls to turn away from global interests.

Veterans won’t help the recruiting crisis until our issues are addressed. Veterans aren’t going to put lipstick on a pig.

HOMELAND SECURITY

Problems persist with how services report extremism, DOD watchdog says. The Defense Department investigated 183 allegations of extremist activity among service members in the past year, including 78 cases of troops advocating for the overthrow of the U.S. government.

CHINA THREAT

China says a US Navy ship ‘illegally intruded’ into waters in the South China Sea. This, in waters near the Second Thomas Shoal, the site of a hot territorial dispute between China and the Philippines.

America’s newest security threat: Chinese lasers. Technology has moved increasingly to the forefront of the global geopolitical agenda.

Pentagon: US arms industry struggling to keep up with China. A draft copy of the new National Defense Industrial Strategy says American companies can’t build weapons fast enough to meet global demand.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Russia to boost size of army by 15% to 1.32 million. Vladimir Putin has ordered the country’s military to increase its number of troops by 170,000, as Moscow’s war in Ukraine enters its 22nd month.

White House warns it will run out of money for Ukraine unless Congress acts by end of year. Team Biden on Monday sounded the alarm.

NATO should be ready for ‘bad news’ from Ukraine. This warning from NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Miscalculations, divisions marked offensive planning by US, Ukraine. On June 15, in a conference room at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, flanked by top U.S. commanders, sat with his Ukrainian counterpart and aides from Kyiv. The room was heavy with an air of frustration.

IRAN THREAT

Ships face attack in Red Sea as US warship fires in self-defense. Commercial ships have come under attack in the Red Sea and a Navy warship there opened fire.

US drone thwarts militia attack on American troops in Iraq. The U.S. conducted a drone strike in Iraq on Dec. 3, as the American troops there continue to be targeted by Iranian-backed militants.

SCARE MONGERING – Despite Washington’s confidence, US war with Iran would be disastrous. Joe Biden’s administration is publicly attempting to avoid a war with Iran, but American officials continue to fan the flames of war with incendiary rhetoric as the war in Gaza risks expanding into a broader regional conflict.

US POWER OVERSEAS

US, Australia eye joint hypersonics experiments in 2024. The Pentagon plans to conduct joint hypersonics tests as soon as next year.

RIP – Divers have found wreckage, remains from Osprey aircraft that crashed off Japan. This from a U.S. Air Force V-22 that crashed last week off southwestern Japan. The remains were being recovered and their identities have yet to be determined.

C-130s to bring holiday cheer and 84,000 pounds of supplies to Pacific Islands. Over 200 bundles containing food, toys, and supplies are set to drop from C-130Js flying across the western Pacific Ocean this weekend.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

The war the world forgot. There’s a genocide in the making in Darfur, Sudan — for the second time in 20 years. This time, the violence is happening on Joe Biden’s watch, and he and his administration have not done enough to stop it.

ISIL claims responsibility for bombing at Catholic mass in Philippines. At least four people were killed and dozens of others injured in the blast at Mindanao State University.

US MILITARY

US Navy champions digital weaponry as decider of future fights. Neither ship nor torpedo alone will strike the deciding blow in future wars, rather the use of “non-kinetic effects” that may not be seen but still wreak havoc on enemy systems will increasingly determine outcomes.

Air Force Secretary: Military needs AI to augment human capabilities. Kendall pushed back on negative hype over military’s use of AI technologies.

Navy’s Santa flyby brings Christmas cheer to Hampton Roads — and meets training requirement. Dozens of families flocked Saturday to Virginia Beach to see Santa hitch a ride with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 2, also known as the Fleet Angels.

The need is significant in Marine Reserves’ 2023 Toys for Tots drive. Staff Sgt. James Caldwell’s personal connection to Toys for Tots began years ago, when he also was one of those children who received toys.
