Republican-turned-independent Justin Amash is eyeing a return to the GOP.
Reports indicate that the former representative is mulling over a run for Michigan’s junior U.S. Senate seat. According to the Daily Caller, Amash announced he is forming an exploratory committee:
Amash released a statement on Twitter, saying he has been urged by several people to run in the Republican primary and that the Senate needs A “principled, consistent constitutional conservative.” Amash announced on Independence Day in 2019 that he would be leaving the Republican Party, and criticized the two-party system, saying it has become an “existential threat to American principles.” He also called for other Americans to join him in pushing back against having just two parties.
However, Amash announced he is considering a run in the Republican primary in Michigan.
Politico reports that Amash described the current GOP field as “uninspired, unserious and unprepared.”
“The people of Michigan and our country deserve better. Today I’m launching the Justin Amash for Senate Exploratory Committee as I consider entering the race,” he continued.
Incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow announced last year that she would not seek reelection in 2024. She most recently won reelection in 2018 with 52.3% of the vote.
The latest RealClearPolitics polling average shows a 5.3-point lead for former President Trump over President Biden in Michigan.
However, the libertarian-leaning Amash has become something of a pariah in today’s Republican Party.
After announcing his departure from the GOP, Amash faced calls to remove him from the House Republican Conference. North Carolina Republican Mark Walker said, “we simply ran out of space for his ego,” and “we should make sure he leaves the Conference and his committee.”
Around the same time, Amash said the House should begin impeachment proceedings against Trump.
