In his hush money trial, a New York City jury convicted Trump on all 34 felony counts. He is also facing indictment in three additional jurisdictions. Meanwhile, House Republicans, who hold a narrow majority, have initiated an impeachment inquiry into President Biden’s alleged connections to his son Hunter’s business dealings. Their efforts have not yielded any results thus far, but on Wednesday, House Republicans referred Hunter and Biden’s brother, Jim, to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.
Cavuto kicked things off by asking Johnson about House Republicans’ dealings, as Mediaite reported.
“There’s sort of a pessimism that begins to develop, Mr. Speaker, that both sides are just playing this political game, a tit-for-tat game,” the longtime host of “Your World” began. “What comes to mind is some of these actions that you have led post-Donald Trump convictions, where conservatives want a floor vote on a bill that would allow current or former presidents to move any case to a federal court. I know Jim Jordan has hinted at denying federal funding for state prosecutors investigating Donald Trump. Measures it probably won’t go very far. So why do them?”
“Well, because we have a responsibility here,” the GOP leader replied. “Congress has very particular duties under the constitution. We have the responsibility of oversight and that’s what we have been engaging in.”
Johnson proceeded to condemn Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, calling his prosecution of Trump “politicized.”
“I certainly understand where you’re coming from, Mr. Speaker, but are you weaponizing the House–,” Cavuto interjected, prompting a fiery retort.
“No!” Johnson interjected.
“–the same way you say Democrats were weaponizing the DOJ to get what they wanted?” Cavuto said, concluding his inquiry.
“No, no, there is a very clear distinction between what we are doing and what they have done in weaponizing the judicial system,” Johnson countered.
Coinciding with Wednesday’s criminal referrals, Hunter Biden is currently on trial in Delaware for three felony gun charges. The charges stem from an incident in October 2018 when Biden allegedly lied about his drug use on a federal form required for purchasing a firearm. Specifically, he purchased a Colt Cobra revolver and is accused of falsely stating that he was not using illegal drugs or addicted to controlled substances.
