“We’ve all been doing it.”
On Friday’s edition of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the comedian and his guests discussed a variety of topics, including Hunter Biden’s transgressions and the ongoing drama involving Caitlin Clark in the WNBA.
However, it was a joke made by Maher about the prevalence of rape in prison and the possibility of Donald Trump being incarcerated that caught the attention of Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher:
In his weekly “New Rules” spot, Maher opened his commentary about prison with a reference to the potential prison sentence Trump could face over the 34 felony convictions in the Stormy Daniels hush money trial.
Maher said “it’s only natural” to want to picture Trump “getting f**ked in the ass” in prison — but added “maybe we shouldn’t”:
I’m just saying maybe we shouldn’t. If not for him, then for the nearly 2 million people behind bars at any given time in this country. That’s more people than in 12 states. They should have their own two senators. And one can be Bob Menendez.
America has a higher incarceration rate than Russia or China, or almost any of the other evildoer countries we’re always shitting our pants over. And yet, for some reason, everything at Walgreens is still locked behind plexiglass.
“But for some reason, Americans simply accept that not only do we lock up way more people, but that if you’re a criminal of any kind? Yes, sodomy is the appropriate comeuppance,” Maher joked.
Incarceration rates in the United States are among the highest in the world due to several factors, including strict sentencing guidelines, the war on drugs and socioeconomic disparities. The shift toward tough-on-crime policies beginning in the 1970s and 1980s led to “three strikes” laws and mandatory minimum sentences, noticeably increasing the number and length of prison sentences.
