In a move sparking considerable controversy, Google's search feature was discovered omitting results related to the recent assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, prompting accusations of election interference from Trump supporters.
According to Fox Business, the tech giant prevented its auto-search function from assisting individuals seeking information on the assassination attempt. Users noted that Google's autocomplete feature did not provide results for the July 13 shooting incident, leading to criticism across social media platforms.
Critics Speak Out
Prominent voices on social media accused Google of trying to influence the upcoming presidential election by manipulating search results. Users reported that even typing in “Trump assassination attempt” yielded no relevant suggestions. Instead, Google's autocomplete offered unrelated historical events such as the failed assassination of Ronald Reagan, the shooting of Bob Marley and even the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Google's Response
A Google representative, addressing the issue, told Fox that no manual intervention was involved in the search predictions. “Our systems have protections against Autocomplete predictions associated with political violence, which were working as intended prior to this horrific event occurring,” the spokesperson stated. “We're working on improvements to ensure our systems are more up to date.”
Ensuring Accurate Information
The spokesperson emphasized Google's commitment to connecting users with high-quality information, particularly following significant events. “Following this terrible act, people turned to Google to find high-quality information – we connected them with helpful results and will continue to do so,” the spokesperson added.
For billionaire Elon Musk, the explanation was decidedly unsatisfactory. Musk questioned the tech giant's motives, and he wasn't the only high-profile critic to do as, as reported by Fox News:
“Wow, Google has a search ban on President Donald Trump.” Musk wrote. “Election interference?”
“They're getting themselves into a lot of trouble if they interfere with the election,” he wrote in a follow-up post.
“Big Tech is trying to interfere in the election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris,” Donald Trump Jr. wrote on X. “We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable.”
Google's spokesperson went on to say the autocomplete feature is “just a tool to help people save time” and they can still search for anything they want.
