It was another busy weekend for street takeovers in the United States. While we can't possibly cover all the illegal gatherings – there are just far too many at this point – we do want to highlight some of the more notable ones.
One sheriff is sticking it to dozens of street takeover suspects.
In Los Angeles County, police were able to break up s street takeover they estimate had 100-plus cars involved. The event was held in the City of Industry late on Saturday night at a newly paved parking lot. As often is the case, that brand spanking new parking lot was left damaged by the time cops showed up.
As reported by KTLA5, police didn't say if they arrested any suspects or impounded vehicles. In other words, they might have just scattered the takeover participants to other locations, as often happens.
Chicago saw a chaotic street takeover unfold in the 19th Ward on Saturday night. Along with the usual donuts, drifting, large crowds and other behavior, residents reported random gunfire. We've noticed that's becoming more of a feature at these illegal gatherings.
Neighbors caught an image of pedestrians standing in a ring of fire, cars drifting around it. Fire, including torching cars, is also becoming increasingly common.
Several homes in the area were also vandalized. This escalation is exactly why police shouldn't be treating takeovers with kid gloves.
When police showed up, some participants shot fireworks at them and one CPD vehicle was rammed, multiple reports indicate. The suspects then sped off, escaping consequences for their actions.
In South Florida, Miami Dade Police responded to a large street takeover early Sunday morning. However, once officers arrived, they realized everyone took off, almost like someone was listening to the police scanner and knew they were coming. However, the police department issued a strongly worded statement about street takeovers. That'll show them!
