The budget deal brokered between House GOP leaders and the Biden administration proposes very modest spending restraint, even as it removes the possibility of another debt ceiling showdown for at least two years.
This pleases no one on the fringes of political discourse – those who embraced the Trumpish assertion that default was better than a bad spending deal or those who say the modest spending restraint is a “cruel attack” on the poor.
Would that the complaints from the fringes ended there. But, sensing an opportunity for air time, the fiscal nihilists have decided they will oppose not just the deal but entertain the possibility of toppling House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, too. Or at least say they are, until pressed ever so slightly:
Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) on Tuesday became the first House conservative to explicitly state he is considering a push to oust McCarthy over his recent deal with President Joe Biden.
“Absolutely” Bishop told POLITICO in an interview on Tuesday, when asked about using the tool that can be used to force out a sitting speaker. “It is inescapable to me. It has to be done.”
Bishop rapidly climbed down from this position, saying:
“I don’t make single decisions like that alone. And so it depends on what the members who have courage” also do, he said.
Ah. It’s one of those “after you” moments in politics, the kind where a bold position is asserted…but only if others (the more the better) join in.
Might others join in? That’s an open question. The real action may come in the Senate, where all it takes to gum up the works is one person of courage, conviction or inflated ego. The Senate is, and long has been, rife with such characters.
In the meantime, we’re left sorting through the hurt feelings, deflated expectations and changing media availabilities of various House members, each of whom has big ideas and strong beliefs. But prefers to act on them only if the group does, too. Welcome to high school….er, Congress.
