No Politicians Actually Like The Press

-

One rule of political campaigns is that when they start making headlines, something has gone terribly wrong.

Such is the case with the Biden campaign, and what, according to Politico, is an “advance team is rife with turmoil and toxicity.”

That's…not the sort of news coverage a candidate wants to see. And that goes double in this case because of one word: “investigation”…

The culture within the office has gotten so bad that the White House Counsel's Office opened an investigation, according to three people who were contacted last fall by the office for interviews. Specifically, they said, investigators looked into complaints of verbal harassment by Ian Mellul, the former associate director of presidential advance. Mellul resigned on March 1 after a months-long investigation, according to multiple people familiar with the situation. Brie Moore, the former director of press advance, also resigned within the past few weeks following complaints from the press corps to the White House about her behavior, several people familiar with the office said.

To be fair, press corps complaints are neither new nor unique to Team Biden. And as for presidential antipathy toward the press? That goes all the way back to George Washington, who believed the press attacks on him were “diabolical.”

And who can forget the Sedition Act, passed in 1798 during the Adams administration, which made it a crime for citizens to “'print, utter, or publish…any false, scandalous, and malicious writing' about the .”

It puts former President 's thuggish charge that the press is the “enemy of the people” in broader historical context. With few exceptions, the press and the president, and the press and campaigns have been at loggerheads from the beginning of the Republic.

But so, too, has the general rule that campaign staffers can be seen, when necessary. But not heard. Most definitely, do not appear in the headlines unless you are speaking formally and are on the record for the campaign or candidate.

And whatever you do…don't appear in a news story alleging there was a prostitute on your room. It's not just embarrassing,  possibly illegal, and absolutely bad for everyone on staff. It also takes the whole term “advance team member” to entirely new and utterly bizarre depths.
