Russia holds tank drills near Ukraine, sounds downbeat on talks. Russia staged live-fire exercises with troops and tanks near the Ukrainian border on Tuesday while sounding a downbeat note over the prospects for talks with the United States that Washington hopes will remove the possible threat of an invasion of Ukraine. US quietly authorized 200 million dollars for Ukraine security. The United States and Russia held talks lasting more than seven hours in Geneva, Switzerland. This follows months of tension near the Ukraine-Russia border, where there are more than 100,000 Russian soldiers.

UN rebukes Kazakhstan after troops spotted wearing blue helmets while policing protests. The United Nations has rebuked Kazakhstan after the Central Asian country's troops were spotted wearing blue helmets reserved for U.N. peacekeepers during a violent crackdown on protesters last week.
North Korea Threat
N.Korea's Kim calls for more ‘military muscle' after watching hypersonic missile test. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for boosting the country's strategic military forces as he observed the test of a hypersonic missile, state media said on Wednesday, officially attending a missile launch for the first time in nearly two years.
International Security
Sahel violence threatens West African coastal states. Concerns grow that violence that has long crippled countries such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will spill over further south. Read More
