This week is shaping up to be a great one for Second Amendment advocates around the country. Governors of both South Dakota and Indiana have signed legislation breaking down barriers for the citizens of their respective states, making it easier for them to exercise the gun rights enshrined to them in the United States Constitution without infringement.
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem signed legislation on Tuesday to repeal various fees associated with concealed carry permits.
South Dakota Senate Bill 212 repeals the authority of government entities from county sheriff's offices to the secretary of state to collect fees for both initial issuance and renewal of conceal carry permits.
Current fees associated with conceal carry permits range between one and two hundred dollars and fall into categories such as administrative fees, background check fees and separate permit fees.
Noem isn't the only governor to sign a pro-Second Amendment bill into law this week.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb also signed legislation that will make his state the 24th one in the country to guarantee the constitutional right of citizens to keep and bear arms — without a permit.
Indiana House Bill 1296, which was signed into law Monday, ensures that law-abiding Hoosiers are able to exercise their right to carry firearms without having to wade through the administrative red tape that comes with the requirements to have a permit.
Holcomb didn't rush to sign the bill into law but still made the right choice, in the end, to stand up for freedom in his state.
Jason Ouimet, executive director of the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) issued a statement thanking the governor and legislators in Indiana for their work, adding that “the government should not mandate that law-abiding citizens get permission before exercising their fundamental, constitutional right to self-defense.”
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill last week to end conceal carry permit requirements in his state, closely following the lead of Alabama Governor Kay Ivey who was the first governor to sign constitutional carry legislation in 2022.
Only one more state needs to pass such legislation this year for half of the states in the country to be constitutional carry states. Similar bills are currently pending in both Georgia and Nebraska.
