Today’s Plumbum: The Poisoning Of A Crazed Civilization

Plumbum is the Latin word for lead. Hence, the chemical chart symbol for lead is Pb. The Romans started using lead pipes for their water systems in 200 BC and continued to do so for 450 years. Hence the word plumbing. They often used lead containers to cook foods. We may shake our heads at the foolishness of their material choice and the generations of brain damage that Roman’s lead use must have caused. However, the joke is on us!

The global citizens of 2024 are unaware that our water, food and air are injuring us far more than the lead concentrations experienced by the Romans. We are swimming in endocrine disrupting chemicals, otherwise known as EDCs or hormone disruptors. The main EDCs we experience are phthalates and bisphenols (BPA and BPS).

These EDCs are found in food containers, building supplies, personal care products, toys, seating materials, etc. From there, they leach into our water, food and air. We, like other animals, efficiently absorb these chemicals from all three sources.

A big uptick in EDC production occurred in the 1960s with the advent of plastics. Global production of phthalates now exceeds 400 million metric tons, an amount 200 times the toxic dose for every human on the planet.

These chemicals hit you where it hurts the most, our children! They cross the placenta into the unborn, and are associated with increase rates of autism and learning disabilities such as ADD and ADHD by interfering with brain cell development. After birth and into our old age, brain exposure to EDCs continues to create neurologic and neurobehavioral disorders that are now prominently on display worldwide.

As in most mammals, the developing prenatal human brain is wired as female until the second trimester. At that time, a series of biochemical events occurs in the male fetus to create typical “male connections”. Pregnant animals exposed to a phthalate (EDC) rich environment have offspring that do not demonstrate the typical male or female behaviors of their species. They are not “transgender,” they are “ungendered.” What are the ramifications of this in humans? How does that knowledge change our views?

Some science researchers have called the developmental neurological disorders caused by EDCs the “silent pandemic.” But the damage is far more extensive than this. Most EDC damage is caused by their disruption of hormone levels which increases emotional and functional disabilities and chronic diseases.

EDC’s toxic interference with our hormones results in impaired cognitive function, depression, sleep and anxiety disorders and poor quality social behaviors. It leads to heart attacks, strokes, dementia, obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, bone and muscle deterioration and more.

Why are there 10 times more diabetics now than in 1970? Why is 50% of our population obese? Why are breast cancer rates so much higher? Why are we decaying? Why is testosterone (the most abundant bioactive hormone in both sexes) more than 60% lower than it was in 1970?
