Carjackers Thwarted By Florida Grandparents

-

So often we hear from police, politicians and others that if a carjacker tries taking your ride you should just let them have it. Maybe that's true sometimes, but when your kids or grandkids are inside, you fight like hell. That's exactly what some grandparents did and they have the bruises to prove it.

As the grandmother told Fox 35 Orlando, some young guys approached as the grandparents got out of their crossover and started unloading beach gear of the rear. This is a fairly common attack scenario since most people are so engrossed in either taking stuff out or putting stuff in their ride they never even spot anyone approaching.

The grandparents got into a physical fight for control of the vehicle, realizing that if the carjackers got away with it, their grandkids would be kidnapped and possibly worse. If there's ever a motivation to fight hard, that's it.

The grandmother called it “the scariest thing I've ever been through.” We can only imagine and hope most never experience it.

But carjackings have become almost common in some parts of the country. There's plenty of debate about what's fueling it, but we think anyone who engages in such an act should have the book thrown at them by prosecutors and shouldn't be treated with kid gloves by a judge.

Carjackings are scary because even if you don't fight and just hand over the keys to your vehicle, there's no guarantee you'll make it out of the situation unharmed.

Thankfully in this case the grandparents only suffered minor injuries and the grandchildren are okay. But it could have turned out so much worse.

It's best to stay aware of your surroundings, especially as you're getting into and out of your car or you're loading/unloading items. Also, lock your doors when you're inside your vehicle, even if you're just sitting somewhere. Vigilance helps lower your chances of being a victim.
