A Democrat and anti-Trump activist is now in custody after authorities intercepted his deadly plot against former President Donald Trump and his vice presidential nominee, J.D. Vance.
The dramatic turn of events comes one week after Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt when a bullet fired by Thomas Matthew Crooks grazed his ear. The shooting also resulted in the tragic death of Corey Comperatore, a brave firefighter who was shot in the head while shielding his family.
David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, sustained critical injuries in the attack.
Suspect Arrested After Online Activity and Death Threats
On Saturday, authorities apprehended Michael M. Wiseman, 68, of Jupiter, Florida, following his incriminating social media activity and the discovery of a letter containing death threats against Trump and Vance. The Jupiter Police Department (JPD) released a statement explaining their investigation:
“After investigating the reports and the suspect's Facebook account, JPD detectives found that Wiseman had made multiple threats against Trump and Vance, who earlier this week became the Republican nominees for President and Vice President, respectively. Threats were also made concerning bodily harm to members of the Trump and Vance families.” [emphasis added]
JPD was alerted to Wiseman's threats by concerned community members. Jupiter is located approximately 20 miles north of Trump's primary residence at Mar-a-Lago. The statement continued:
“JPD coordinated the investigation with the United States Secret Service and the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office. JPD officers took Wiseman into custody without incident.”
Per National Review:
Wiseman has admitted to authoring the threatening posts, according to police.
“We take all threats to human beings seriously,” Jupiter deputy police chief Michael Barbera said. “When you get on that keyboard and want to post to social media, really think about what you're saying or putting out there.”
“I think in this level of politics and the way things are going in this world, I think all threats should be taken serious and investigated thoroughly,” he added.
If convicted, Wiseman could face up to 15 years in prison.
While the investigation is ongoing, details about Wiseman's background remain scarce.
Similarly, Crooks' motive for the assassination attempt on Trump has yet to be identified or disclosed.
