Authorities in Maine are in a desperate race against time.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for Robert Card, who they call a “person of interest” in the latest mass shooting to leave a community in tatters.
Card, an Army reservist and trained firearms instructor, allegedly went on a shooting spree at two locations in Lewiston, Maine, late Wednesday.
At a press conference Thursday, officials said 18 people died and 13 more were injured.
Authorities believe Card may have a police scanner, allowing him to evade his pursuers.
A frantic manhunt and lockdown orders affecting several cities are underway.
As CNN reports:
Federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and others, have joined the search for a person of interest who police say is connected to the shootings in Lewiston, Maine, according to US law enforcement officials.
The FBI has sent dozens of agents and other staff to assist the local and state police leading the investigation.
These include evidence collection and SWAT teams, victims assistance experts and technical specialists, US law enforcement officials said.
New York ATF is also responding in support of Boston ATF to the massive active shooter incident and subsequent manhunt, they wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Investigators are scouring for cell phone signals and other electronic records that may give away the shooter's whereabouts.
