MAGA favorite Marjorie Taylor Greene had an unwelcome Christmas surprise. The Georgia congresswoman revealed that she and her family fell victim to a swatting incident on Christmas morning. Greene said the occurrence marked the eighth time officers were forced to respond after someone called police under false pretenses.
Greene didn't divulge any further information, but police confirmed to NBC News that the Republican was subjected to a swatting attack:
Major Rodney Bailey of the police department in Rome, Georgia, told NBC News that a person based in Rome, New York, made a call to the suicide hotline, claiming that he had shot his girlfriend at Greene's address in Georgia and threatening to kill himself.
The Rome Police Department canceled their response, concluding the call was a hoax after speaking with Greene's local security liaison.
Swatting is when someone makes a false report of a crime in progress to draw police to a certain location.
The harassment tactic can take a deadly turn. In 2017, a Wichita SWAT team showed up with guns drawn at Andrew Finch's home after an unrelated online gaming dispute led police to his residence. Police believed a hostage situation was ongoing. An arriving officer shot and killed Finch as he exited the home.
Greene has previously been the victim of swatting incidents, including last year when there were false reports of shootings happening outside her home, located about 70 miles northwest of Atlanta. Police responded in person to those incidents and determined that they were false reports.
Greene represents Georgia's 14th Congressional District in the northwestern part of the state, covering the cities of Rome, Dalton and Calhoun.
In February, Greene claimed that she was “attacked” by an “insane” woman while dining with her staff at a restaurant.
“I was attacked in a restaurant tonight by an insane woman and screamed at by her adult son,” Greene said in a tweet. “They had no respect for the restaurant or the staff or the other people dining or people like me who simply have different political views.”
“People used to respect others even if they had different views,” she added. “But not anymore. Our country is gone.”
