Massachusetts’ 911 System Down Statewide

-

The emergency system is experiencing a statewide outage. Authorities are urging residents to use alternative emergency contact numbers until the system is restored. Efforts to fix the issue are ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Residents are advised to stay calm and follow instructions from local officials.

“The current 911 system is down statewide, if you have an emergency and need assistance pull your nearest Fire Box, or call the Boston Fire Department at 617-343-2880. You can also get assistance by going to your nearest Firehouse,” a post on X from the Boston Fire Department reads.

On average, around 11,000 calls are made to 911 each day in Massachusetts. This figure can fluctuate based on various factors such as time of year, weather conditions and specific events.

The average number of life-threatening calls handled daily by Bay State paramedics, firefighters and officers can vary. Based on available data:

  • Paramedics/EMS: Approximately 1,000 to 1,500 calls per day.
  • Firefighters: Around 150 to 200 calls per day.
  • Police officers: Roughly 500 to 700 calls per day.

Massachusetts's rates have shown mixed trends recently. According to a report from SafeWise, there has been a noticeable increase in violent crime rates in the state. The rate has risen from 3.0 incidents per 1,000 people to 3.7 incidents per 1,000 people, which represents a 23% increase year over year. Despite this increase, Massachusetts still maintains a lower violent crime rate compared to the national average.

At the same time, traffic fatalities have been on the rise in Massachusetts. In 2022, the state experienced a record-breaking number of traffic deaths with at least 430 fatalities, marking the second consecutive year of increased road fatalities. That year's figure represents a significant increase from the previous high of 418 deaths in 2021.

Distracted driving poses an especially significant risk to vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, whose numbers of deaths are also at record levels in the Commonwealth.
