San Antonio Police announced the arrest of two suspects, Joseph Jimenez, 19, and Ricardo Samaniego, 18, in connection with the shooting near the main gate of the Chapman Annex at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland (JBSA) in August.
The two men were initially arrested in relation to a separate shooting at an apartment building in San Antonio. Investigators later determined that the stolen SUV used in the apartment shooting was the same vehicle involved in the Lackland incident on Aug. 17.
On the morning of August 17, the U.S. Air Force Security Forces at the Chapman Annex reported that they had engaged in gunfire with armed individuals in two separate incidents. It was believed that the armed individuals had targeted the base's main gate. However, authorities now believe that the gunfire was aimed at a nearby home rather than the base itself. Fortunately, no military personnel were injured.
The arrests came as part of an investigation into the apartment shooting, which led police to connect the stolen SUV to both incidents. Further details on the arrests and investigation were reported by News4SA:
Investigators said two suspects used a stolen vehicle to shoot at homes near JBSA-Lackland. They discovered that Jimenez was involved in a prior shooting that happened around Marbach Road. Chief McManus said that investigators found shell cases at the location of both of those shootings. He also said that “a vehicle was seen in the area of the base that matched one stolen out of Bexar County in the early morning of Aug 17. That vehicle was later recovered unoccupied in SAPD jurisdiction.”
A warrant was obtained for Jimenez on an unrelated charge of a deadly conduct with a firearm.
Chief McManus said video evidence showed Jimenez and Samaniego “acted together to drive the stolen car around and fire multiple rounds into the direction of several houses in the field by JBSA.”
