The top-ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee is calling on Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from the likely Supreme Court decision regarding former President Donald Trump's eligibility to hold public office.
Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin's request follows rulings by the Colorado Supreme Court and Maine's secretary of state. The Colorado court ruled that former President Donald Trump was subject to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Likewise, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows found Trump to be ineligible due to his actions following the 2020 election.
A Supreme Court ruling on Trump's eligibility would definitively settle the matter.
In the meantime, legal challenges are pending in other states.
The Hill transcribed Raskin's responses to CNN's Dana Bash and noted his thoughts:
Raskin argued that Trump did disqualify himself from the ballot and said if the Supreme Court overturns the rulings in Maine and Colorado, the justices will be “falling for the argument that this is undemocratic.”
“Donald Trump is in that tiny, tiny number of people who've essentially disqualified themselves,” Raskin added.
