A mass casualty incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. in Baltimore when a large container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
According to the Baltimore City Fire Department, up to 20 construction workers and over a dozen vehicles plunged into the 47 degree water. At least two people were rescued, fire chief James Wallace informed reporters. He noted that one is in “very serious condition.”
Multiple power outages on the bridge and a possible loss of control on the 1,000 foot long vessel may have contributed to the collision.
Video shows black smoke coming from the Singapore-flagged ship “Dali,” signaling a last-minute shift to reverse. It takes about a mile for a ship that size to go backwards.
Both the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are authorized to investigate marine collisions. The agencies jointly decide who takes the lead on a case-by-case basis.
