Hill Harper, the actor known for his role on “The Good Doctor” reportedly plans to exit the series as he campaigns for Michigan‘s open Senate seat.
Harper (D), who plays Dr. Marcus Andrews on the ABC drama, won't be appearing in the show's upcoming seventh season, according to TVLine, which was the first to report the news.
Harper “feels strongly that there is a crisis in American democracy — too often, government only works for the rich and powerful while the rest of us struggle to find a voice,” his campaign spokesperson told the outlet Monday.
“Hill is dedicating his efforts full time to fixing that, and he's running for the U.S. Senate as an active union member to give working people more of a voice in Congress,” the spokesperson said.
Debbie Stabenow (D) announced earlier this year she wouldn't run for reelection in 2024, teeing up an intense battle for the open Hosue seat.
Harper faces a Democrat primary bid against Rep. Elissa Slotkin (Mich.).
Harper isn't the first actor to pivot their career to politics this cycle. Former “Boy Meets World” star Ben Savage is running for California's 30th congressional district which is currently represented by Adam Schiff (D).
Savage rose to stardom in the 90s for his role as Cory Matthews on “Boy Meets World” which ran from 1993 to 2000. He returned to play Matthews in the recent Disney spinoff “Girl Meets World,” which ran from 2014 to 2017.
