Fox News host Neil Cavuto has had an acrimonious relationship with former President Donald Trump.
And it doesn’t look like it’ll get better anytime soon.
In 2018, the longtime Fox News personality blasted Trump in a four-minute-long monologue. The following year, he criticized Trump’s claims that Fox wasn’t helping him anymore with an on-air retort, telling the camera, “Mr. President, we don’t work for you. I don’t work for you.”
“My job is to cover you, not fawn over you or rip you, just report on you,” he added. (RELATED: Laura Ingraham Urges Trump To ‘Stop Talking About 2020’)
This time, Cavuto’s upset at Trump for his aggressive attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).
Per Mediaite:
Trump has escalated his attacks on the governor, who seems poised to announce a bid for the Republican nomination. That would put him on a collision course with the former president, who has already declared.
“Florida was great long before Ron DeSanctus got there,” Trump said in a video last week, using one of his nicknames for the governor. This week, he said DeSantis is weak on crime and also embraced lockdowns during the pandemic.
Trump didn’t mention that he greenlighted nationwide lockdowns during the weekend of March 14-15, 2020, three days after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
At a press conference on Monday, March 16, 2020, Trump announced from the podium in the White House Press Briefing Room that, “My administration is recommending that all Americans, including the young and healthy, work to engage in schooling from home when possible, avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people. Avoid discretionary travel and avoid eating and drinking at bars, restaurants, and public food courts. If everyone makes this change or these critical changes and sacrifices now, we will rally together as one nation and we will defeat the virus and we’re going to have a big celebration together.”
DeSantis was among the first governors to lift restrictions on his residents.
On Thursday, Cavuto used his program to challenge the 45th president’s attacks:
“I don’t know any other way to say it,” he began. “The former president is lying about the record of Governor DeSantis. He’s lying about how far he went to deal with shutdowns that were going across the country, but not going on in Florida. He’s lying about some of his accomplishments in the past.”
Cavuto asked RealClearPolitics’ publisher Tom Bevan if the former president’s rhetoric against DeSantis would hurt him in the Republican primaries. Bevan said it was possible but added a significant caveat about Trump’s chances:
“Well, it depends on how many people are in the race,” he replied. “If we’re talking about the Republican primary – if it’s DeSantis and four or five others – then his 30 or 34% might be enough of a plurality to win out.”
