Beto O’Rourke Announces Campaign Pause

gubernatorial hopeful Beto O'Rourke (D) is taking a break from the campaign trail per doctor's orders.

On Sunday, O'Rourke announced on Twitter that he was hospitalized due to a bacterial infection and will have to cancel upcoming campaign stops.

“While my symptoms have improved, I will be resting at home in El Paso in accordance with the doctors' recommendations,” the Democratic candidate wrote. “I am sorry to have had to postpone events because of this, but promise to be back on the road with you as soon as I am able.”

The Democrat challenger is hoping to knock out incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in what is expected to be a highly contentious and close race.

A recent CBS News/YouGov poll reported Gov. Abbott with an 8-point lead over O'Rourke despite voters' relatively low approval rating. A separate poll from Morning News-University of Texas at Tyler reported Abbott leading by seven points.

Eighty-five percent of Republicans say they'd vote for Abbott in the race for governor, while 81 percent of Democrats say they'd vote for O'Rourke. 

A slightly higher percentage of Democrats reported they'd cross party lines to back Abbott than Republicans who said they'd do the same for O'Rourke — 12 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

O'Rourke has pushed for stricter gun control measures in the Lone Star state, especially following the tragic Uvalde massacre. Abbott has remained focused on reduction, controlling the border crisis and the .

In May, O'Rourke drew harsh criticism for interrupting a press conference regarding the Uvalde shooting with many accusing the Democrat of attempting to use capitalize on the tragedy for political gain. (Related: Beto O'Rourke Interrupts School Shooting Presser to Score Political Points)

  2. Was Uvalde police chief a dem? Was it a political move of the left? Beto doesn’t have a chance in the world.

  3. He better be glad his wife has money. He is like a turd in a punch bowl. Nobody want it and it disgust everyone. He is as likeable as Hillary and Amy Klobacher. They have ti hang a steak around their neck to get the dog to come to them.,
