In an interview with Univision, President Joe Biden said his administration is considering whether he can unilaterally close the border ahead of the presidential election.

According to the president, his advisers are considering the possibility of him shutting down the border and how it may be challenged in court.

During his interview with Enrique Acevedo, Biden admitted, “we’re trying to work through that right now.” (RELATED: Mexico’s President Tells Americans To Brace For Unrelenting Flow Of Migrants – Unless This Happens)

Acevedo asking if a final decision had been made on executive action concerning the border, including shutting it down.

“We’re examining whether or not I have that power,” Biden acknowledged. “I would have that power under the legislation when the border has over…5,000 people a day trying to cross the border, because you can’t manage it, slow it up. There’s no guarantee that I have that power all by myself without legislation. And some have suggested I should just go ahead and try it, and if I get shut down by the court, I get shut down by the court, but we’re trying to work through that right now.”

Biden made his comments weeks after a supplemental package that included border security enforcement mechanisms failed in the Senate, following criticism from former President Donald Trump that it was insufficient. The Hill explains:

In his State of the Union address last month, Biden pushed for Congress to send a bill to his desk. He also placed blame on former President Trump after the border security package collapsed.

“I’m told my predecessor called Republicans in Congress and demanded they block the bill,” he said at the time.

“He feels it would be a political win for me and a political loser for him,” Biden added. “It’s not about him or me. It’d be a winner for America.”

Biden doubled down on his comments Tuesday, claiming he wouldn’t give up on the bipartisan bill.

Trump’s plan to address the border crisis involves deporting the equivalent population of several U.S. states that have arrived during Biden’s administration. This includes an executive order on his first day in office to deny passports, Social Security numbers and other government benefits to children of illegal immigrants born in the United States.
