In 2005, then- District Attorney introduced a controversial proposal to delay prosecution of drug dealers until their third offense. The plan faced swift opposition and was quickly rejected by officials.

Harris' proposal suggested that individuals caught selling narcotics would not face charges until they had been arrested for the same offense at least three times. The idea was part of a broader effort to reform the city's approach to drug , focusing resources on more serious offenders while.

And endorses Kamala…

President announced on Sunday that he is withdrawing from the race for president of the United States.

The announcement came in a letter posted on social media and follows dissent within his own party about his ability to defeat as well as growing concerns about his cognitive ability.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” the letter reads. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Though Biden has endorsed Vice President as his replacement in the race for the White House, several prominent Democrats may still compete for the party's nomination at next month's Democratic National Convention.

Potential Candidates

Kamala Harris

As the current vice president and Biden's chosen successor, Kamala Harris is the obvious front-runner. She has a significant profile, having previously served as a U.S. senator from and as the state's attorney general. Perhaps most importantly, she has the most straightforward path to transferring Biden's campaign funds or “war chest.” Legal and procedural considerations might prevent other candidates from acquiring these funds. However, the Democratic Party believes that both major and small-dollar donors will be reinvigorated and reinvest in the presidential race with Biden out, regardless of the nominee.

After the June 27 presidential debate, polls showed Harris performing as well as Biden against Trump. Recent polls after the attempt on Trump's life reinforce this trend. Trump has maintained a slim lead in the national polls for months.

Gretchen Whitmer

The governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, has emerged as a strong candidate, particularly noted for her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and her focus on infrastructure and education. Whitmer's leadership in a key swing state adds to her appeal.

Gavin Newsom

The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has been gaining national attention for his handling of state issues and his progressive policies. Newsom's efforts on climate change and social justice have bolstered his profile with the left.

Amy Klobuchar

Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota is known for her pragmatic approach and ability to work across the aisle. Her moderate stance and Midwestern roots could appeal to a broad spectrum of voters, including those in swing states where Trump currently leads.

Others

Other potential candidates could include figures like Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, or Andy Beshear, the governor of Kentucky, though they come with their own sets of strengths and challenges.

Biden's Political Career

Biden's political career began with his election to the New Castle County Council in 1970. In 1972, at just 29 years old, Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware, making him one of the youngest individuals to ever hold this office. His early career was characterized by a focus on domestic issues and local governance.

Senate Career and Legislative Achievements

Foreign Relations and War Policies

During his 36 years in the Senate, Biden became a prominent figure in foreign policy. As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he played a significant role in U.S. international relations, particularly advocating for American intervention in the Balkans during the 1990s to stop ethnic cleansing. He supported the War in Afghanistan and voted in favor of the Iraq War but later criticized the conduct of the war.

The 1994 Bill

One of Biden's most notable legislative achievements is the 1994 Crime Bill, formally known as the Violent Crime Control and Act. This comprehensive crime bill aimed to reduce crime through tougher sentencing, increased funding for police and expanded prison systems. While the bill succeeded in lowering crime rates, it has faced criticism for contributing to mass incarceration, disproportionately affecting Black Americans.

Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

Biden also authored the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994, a landmark piece of legislation providing protections and support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. VAWA marked a significant advancement in addressing gender-based violence and has been reauthorized multiple times with bipartisan support.

Controversies

Clarence Thomas Hearings

Biden's career has not been without controversy. His handling of the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination hearings in 1991 drew significant criticism from liberals, particularly for his treatment of Anita Hill, who accused Thomas of sexual harassment.

Iraq War Vote

Biden's 2002 vote in favor of the Iraq War resolution remains a contentious aspect of his career. While he later criticized the Bush administration's conduct of the war, the initial support has been a point of debate among his critics and supporters alike.

Vice Presidency and Presidential Tenure

In 2009, Biden became Vice President under Barack Obama, serving two terms. He was instrumental in passing the Affordable Care Act and played a key role in the economic stimulus package following the 2008 financial crisis. Elected as the 46th President of the United States in 2020, Biden has focused on addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery and inequality.

The latest RealClearPolitics polling average shows Biden with a 40% job approval rating, indicating widespread dissatisfaction among voters.

Why didn’t they ‘have’ him endorse Kamala? I bet he was told to leave her out of it. I guess they need a man or a white woman as a Democrat President. Hypocrisy reigns in the Democrat Party.
