Iowa Poll Should Have Democrats Hoping to Defy History Terrified

The president's party almost always loses seats in midterm elections, but a new poll out of the heartland is particularly ominous for .

Though no longer the swing state it once was, remains competitive for Democrats in the right environment. shows they have their work cut out for them this cycle.

CNN's Chris Cillizza reports:

Just 31% of Iowans approved of how is handling his duties as president while a whopping 62% disapprove. Biden's disapproval number is below the lowest ever measured by ace pollster J. Ann Selzer for former presidents (35%) and Barack Obama (36%).

Biden's approval on pulling American troops out of Afghanistan stands at a meager 22%. Approval for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic is now just 36% among Iowans.

This poll is rightly understood as a blaring red alarm for not just Biden but especially down-ballot Democrats — in Iowa and elsewhere — who will be running in the 2022 midterms.

President Trump won all but six of Iowa's 99 counties in 2020 as he did in 2016. Further down-ballot Republican Sen. Joni Ernst won re-election and two of the state's four congressional districts flipped back into the GOP column.
