It is unlikely that one of America's most well-liked politicians will be with us for much longer.
Jimmy Carter's grandson, Jason, gave a recent update about his grandfather's health and said that the 39th president of the United States – the longest-lived in U.S. history – is becoming increasingly frail.
The younger Carter recalled that when people asked how the former president was doing, he didn't know what to say. “Well, I don't know myself,” he joked.
The update came at a forum in Atlanta.
As NBC News reports:
“My grandfather is doing OK. He has been in hospice, as you know, for some — almost a year and a half now,” said Jason Carter, chair of the board of trustees for the Carter Center.
“And he really is, I think, coming to the end that, that — as I've said before, there's a part of this faith journey that is so important to him. And there's a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end, and I think he has been there in that space,” Jason Carter said.
…
His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, for whom Tuesday's mental health forum, in its 28th year, is named, died in November.
Carter, 99, entered in-home hospice care in February 2023 due to a variety of health issues, including metastatic melanoma. His treatment emphasizes pain management, emotional support and assistance with daily activities rather than continuing with curative treatments.
