An unhinged home invader forced his way into an elderly woman’s residence in California, stripped off his clothes and attempted to stab a police officer with a butcher knife before being fatally shot by LAPD deputies.
Police released intense video footage capturing the sequence of events that led to Lavell Adams’ death on July 29.
In the early morning hours, authorities responded to frantic 911 calls from an elderly Los Angeles woman who feared for her life after Adams set a fire in her home and barricaded himself in a bedroom.
A neighbor reported that Adams first tried to break into his home through a window but, unable to gain entry, moved on to the elderly woman’s house.
When officers arrived, they saw smoke billowing from the home and called for additional assistance from firefighters. Footage shows firefighters informing the deputies that a knife-wielding man was trapped inside a room.
The video captures the deputies attempting to coax Adams out, but he did not respond. One deputy tried to persuade him to exit through a window while Adams muttered and shouted from inside.
Police eventually forced their way into the locked room and instructed Adams to stand with his hands up. However, the naked suspect sprang up with a knife in hand, attempting to stab one of the officers.
A deputy fired nonlethal beanbag rounds at Adams, causing him to drop the knife and collapse.
The video then shows deputies retreating to safety outside, ordering Adams to exit the house unarmed. Adams emerged from a window with a blanket over his head, which he whipped off before charging at the officers.
At that moment, the police fired a barrage of bullets, stopping Adams in the front yard, where he later died.
Police have not yet determined Adams’ motive for breaking into the woman’s home and barricading himself inside without clothing.
