Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is under fire from an unlikely source: the hosts of ABC’s The View.
The daytime talk show’s panel ripped into the Maine Democrat this week following reports that he engaged in extensive sexting with multiple women while married, adding to a growing list of controversies that have complicated his campaign against longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
The criticism marks another setback for a candidate once viewed as one of Democrats’ strongest opportunities to flip a Republican-held Senate seat in 2026.
According to reports, Platner exchanged sexually explicit messages with multiple women while married to his wife, Amy Gertner, whom he married in 2023. Initial reports suggested the number of women involved could be as high as twelve, though a current campaign official reportedly disputed that figure and claimed the number was lower.
The controversy became public after Platner’s wife alerted campaign staff about the messages. Former political director Genevieve McDonald has since confirmed the existence of the communications.
During a discussion of the scandal, The View hosts expressed frustration not only with Platner’s conduct but with what they described as a broader pattern of flawed political candidates.
“It is disturbing; it is horrible. Why can’t we do better? Why can’t we have better candidates?” co-host Ana Navarro said.
Republican commentator and co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that political parties often convince themselves to overlook character concerns for the sake of winning elections, only to regret those decisions later.
“As a Republican who sadly watched the quality of candidates we’ve put in office or chosen to run diminish over the last decade, I will tell you that it’s not worth it,” Griffin said. “It’s not worth compromising your morals and values and integrity.”
Notably, several hosts suggested the sexting scandal may not even be the most troubling issue surrounding Platner’s candidacy.
The Marine veteran has been forced to address a series of past comments and controversies that have resurfaced during the campaign. Among them is a tattoo resembling the Nazi SS “Totenkopf” or death’s head symbol. Platner has denied any knowledge of the symbol’s historical association with Nazism and has since covered the tattoo.
Additional scrutiny has focused on comments posted through a now-deleted Reddit account linked to Platner. Those posts reportedly included inflammatory statements about military service, race, sexual assault, and warfare.
“This man should be nowhere near Congress,” Sara Haines said.
The backlash is significant because Maine represents one of Democrats’ most important pickup opportunities in their effort to regain control of the Senate.
Sen. Susan Collins has held the seat for decades and remains one of the last remaining Republican statewide officeholders in a state that has increasingly trended Democratic in federal elections. Political analysts have long viewed Collins as one of the GOP’s most vulnerable incumbents.
Despite the controversies, Platner remains the presumptive Democratic nominee ahead of the June 9 primary and currently holds a polling advantage over Collins in several recent surveys.
The scandal also highlights the recurring challenge of balancing electoral competitiveness with candidate quality.
While partisan activists often focus on ideology and electability, voters frequently place significant weight on character, temperament, and personal conduct. History has repeatedly shown that scandals involving ethics, honesty, or personal behavior can quickly overshadow policy debates and campaign messaging.
For Democrats, the timing is particularly awkward. The party has spent years criticizing Republican candidates over personal scandals and character concerns. Critics now argue that Platner’s growing list of controversies could undermine Democrats’ ability to make those same arguments against their opponents.
Whether voters ultimately view the mounting allegations as disqualifying remains to be seen. But the fact that even a largely progressive panel like The View devoted significant airtime to criticizing Platner underscores just how far concerns about his candidacy have spread.
