When you're acting in defense of your life, you shoot to stop the threat… and there may be more than one person willing to cross the line from armed robbery to cold-blooded murder.
San Antonio Police Department officials are investigating a shooting that ended in two men being taken to the hospital.
At about 3:51 a.m. early Sunday morning, August 25, a San Antonio Police Department preliminary report says officials responded to a call for a shooting at the 200 block of Ranch Valley.
When officers arrived on-scene, they found a 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to the hospital by Emergency Medical Services in critical condition, according to the San Antonio Police Department. During the investigation, officials were told another man was taken to the hospital and found to have a gunshot wound to the hip that was connected to the shooting, SAPD said.
According to the San Antonio police, the two men taken to the hospital were the aggressors, and the individual who shot them was defending himself from a robbery.
Police haven't released many other details about the defensive gun use, except to confirm that the two men who targeted the 34-year-old armed citizen were armed as well, and the victim isn't currently facing any charges for his actions.
Authorities in two other jurisdictions were also able to make quick determinations in other defensive gun uses over the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, law enforcement in the southeast Missouri town of Scott City were called out to a home on a report of a burglary in progress, but by the time they arrived the homeowner had been forced to protect himself with a firearm.
When officers arrived, the homeowner took them to the scene and to the intruder. Officers began life-saving measures along with other first responders.
Police identified the intruder as Jason L. Vermillion, of Scott City.
Vermilion was rushed to a Cape Girardeau hospital and died a short time later.
Police processed the scene and investigated it as a homicide.
According to investigators, the homeowner said he heard his backdoor being forced open and confronted the intruder.
Scott City police chief Christopher Griggs told local media that after an initial investigation, he believes the homeowner was acting to protect his life and property from the intruder.
In Medford, Oregon, police say a resident of an apartment was acing lawfully when he shot and killed an intruder on Saturday night.
Medford Police says officers were dispatched to the complex just after 6 p.m. Saturday, following a report of an unknown individual attempting to force entry into an apartment.
Within minutes, a second call was received reporting gunshots at the same location.
Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male with apparent gunshot wounds, who preliminary investigations revealed had forced entry into the apartment and was advancing towards a resident with a knife.
Another resident fired in self defense.
Each of these stories will quickly vanish from the local news, and I'd be shocked if any of them received any kind of national coverage at all. But while most of us will soon forget the details of these particular defensive gun uses, the life-and-death moments that the armed citizens faced will stay with them for the remainder of their days. Traumatic as their experiences may have been, thankfully, and in large part because they had the means to defend themselves, none of these gun owners came to any physical harm.
