In the aftermath of Kamala Harris’ pick of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for her VP, scandal after scandal has been brought to light regarding Walz’s character and public reputation. First and foremost are the disturbing accusations of cowardice during the Minnesota governor’s time serving in the military. Retired Command Sergeant Majors Thomas Behrends and Paul Herr have alleged that Walz lied about his service record in the Minnesota National Guard; they claim that he shirked his duty as the senior enlisted unit leader. After being conditionally promoted to the position of Command Sergeant Major following a 24-year-long service record, Walz was reduced in rank to Master Sergeant and failed to complete proper retirement documents because he dropped out of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy. Walz claimed that he retired before his battalion was deployed to Iraq in 2005.
Still, according to Behrends and Herr, he walked away from his responsibilities and fellow soldiers after receiving the information that his unit would be mobilized there the following year, all under the guise of the pursuit of running his campaign. Walz allegedly completely disregarded his duties with full knowledge that his battalion would be deployed in Iraq while he would be safely at home running a campaign. Just as his unit was called up to serve under fire, Walz decided this was a perfect time to “retire” and reshift his focus towards more suitable duties.
Not only did he attempt to cover this incident up, he misrepresented it publicly with the creation of his very own Congressional Challenge Coin, which falsely claimed his status as a Command Sergeant Major instead of the truthful rank of Master Sergeant. Challenge coins serve as a symbol of membership and loyalty; they denote a sense of camaraderie to all those who carry them as they represent the individual achievements or service a person has accomplished in his or her life. They are a physical embodiment of appreciation and respect for the person’s surrounding peers and superiors, as explained by Fork Union Military Academy. As such, Walz’s misrepresentation of his service record is both disrespectful and deceitful, as it dishonors those of greater rank and bravery.
Despite each successive emergent issue with the Harris-Walz campaign, Republicans now have a brand new opportunity to reshift the narrative, focusing on the lack of accountability and the excessively radical political stances both Harris and Walz have committed themselves to. As there is neither dignity nor honor in Walz’s presentation of his career, there can be no denying the utter lack of respect for the American public from our potential Democratic leaders.
