A concealed carry license (CCL) holder in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood took swift action to defend her family when an intruder attempted to break into her home Saturday night.
The single mother of two, who has chosen to remain anonymous, recounted the terrifying moment when a man tried to climb through her daughter's bedroom window. Without hesitation, she used her legally owned firearm to stop the threat, only to have it confiscated by police following the incident.
The incident unfolded around 10:45 p.m. on East 69th Street when the woman's daughter alerted her that someone was trying to come through her window. “I just went into action,” the mother explained, stating that her protective instincts took over when she saw the man hanging onto the window.
After warning the intruder that she was armed, she fired a single shot, striking him in the leg. The man, later identified as 36-year-old Christopher Grady, was transported to the hospital in fair condition and has been charged with felony attempted burglary. While no further injuries were reported, the emotional toll on the family was significant.
“I've owned that firearm for years, and this was the first time I ever had to use it,” the mother said. “I didn't want anything to happen to my children. I would rather it be me than them.”
Despite her responsible use of the gun in what many are calling a clear case of self-defense, the police confiscated her firearm—her only means of protection.
This has left her and her family feeling vulnerable. “It's terrifying. Now I'm here, unprotected, and I just don't feel safe,” she said.
Neighbors praised her decisive actions, with one resident stating;
“Good for her. If I was in the same situation, I'd do the exact same thing.” Another added, “It just goes to show you shouldn't be breaking into people's homes.”
As the investigation continues, the mother hopes to move her family to a safer location. While grateful that the suspect was caught, she is left uneasy about her ability to defend her family going forward.
“The police helped, but they took my gun. Now, what am I supposed to do if it happens again?” she asked.
For many pro-gun advocates, this case highlights a growing concern over the loss of self-defense rights, particularly in Democrat-run cities like Chicago. Despite the justified nature of her actions, this mother now faces an uncertain future and potential retaliation without her firearm.
